I have been thinking about getting a betta. I would get a 5 gallon tank with a hood, light, filter, and heater. My question is would I have to cycle the tank like I did my others?

If you have other tanks, it doesn't take much filter media to cycle a five gallon. Three or four cycled bio rings or a decent sized filter sponge would handle the ammonia produced by a single betta very easily. Also, if your tank is not 100% cycled, bettas are much more tolerant of ammonia than many other fish, so they are suitable for fish in cycling. You can't just dump them in a tank and never cycle it though, if you do go fish in with a betta you will still need to go through the daily testing and water changing until all your readings are zeroed.
