I have a 20 gallon long tank that I'm hoping to plant soon. It's cycled and has been running well for a few months. I looked at the light today and noticed that it's only a 17w flourescent. I have no idea if it can hold a much more powerful light, but I do know that I want very easy plants that don't require a ton of care and that can live in low light conditions. I'd also prefer plants that can grow on driftwood or rocks or can be put in the gravel (if there are such a thing.)

Should I be looking at a slightly brighter light?
What are my plant options?

T8 tend to be at most 18 watts each. T5 are a much more valid option with 24watt average lighting. I got a dual T5 light for 70 bucks on amazon. Thing is I may need to use a CO2 system if I use both. over 2WPG needs CO2 otherwise ferts will just do fine. Better lighting is better but if you cant low light plants should work just fine.

What's the difference between T8 and T5? If I want to switch from T8 to T5, does that mean a new hood?

T5 tend to be more powerful then a T8 but they each have there own system. They seem to be close in price too. I am still in the process of setting up my 20 long and I have a pretty good setup but kinda expensive. Tank+Flora Sand+First Layer+Lighting+Heater cost me around 250-300. Luckly I already have a filter (Fluval 2+). More lighting is always better but keep in mind CO2 may be needed.

T8 & T5 have different connections, you will need a new hood or maybe an electrician can change the ends to accept T5's

You dont need high light, nor major expence though to have a beautiful tank. My fully planted tank runs at just over 1WPG and, well i think it looks great *L*

If you are changing over from T8 to T5 you'll probably need to change the ballast too. That's what powers the lights. I doubt they'll be the same from T8 and T5.
