I posted this in the cory section, but think its more appropriate for here.

I fell in love with catfish and decided to get some different types, so i went with albinos. I bought two about 2 weeks ago, and one of them died last week....i guess that was my fault due to the stress of changing the tank and putting new sand in, since he was a young one. So it left me with 1 albino. So two days ago i bought another two albinos to keep him company.

Now i think one of the new additions is gona die, again its the smallest. Ever since i added him to the tank hes been obsessed with the top of the tank, and the other one swims in the middle of the tank back and forth against the front window lol, i think he likes the airstone tbh. But anyways today iv noticed less movement from the smaller one thats at the top of the tank, and he kinda sits in a verticle position with his mouth at the very top of the water, and sometimes floats about with the current and then will swim off. Sometimes he done these kind of rolls too.

Also i noticed that the two new catfish have some kind of stuff, well fuzz, hard to explain, on their fins, and on the one who likes the airstone seems to have a tiny bit took out of his caudal, and his dorsal fin.

None of my 3 peppers have this, and neither does the other albino, or the betta.

The albinos i bought were from pets at home, and i made sure they were from a tank with no dead ones in, and the liveliest. And they looked in good condition when i studied them before buying.

Since noticing the one swimming at the top, i took the top off and put my hand in to chase him down and its worked. I also put my hand cupped in the water and he swam into it and started picking at me which was pretty cool. But since then ehs gone to the bottom of the tank.

Edit: Damn just after i posted this message, i thought he was dead. Was on the bottom of the tank practically on his side, so i moved the ornament to fish him out and hes now swimming about again....

Heres a video of him doing his thing, click it to view it:

If you look at the video and see the position hes in, verticle, thats what hes doing now, but no movement for a while, and then he'l be off again.

And if i had to guess, even though im not an expert and havent seen fin rot before, i would guess it was that. Their fins look ragged around the edges, with tiny irregularities in them, compared to all my 3 peppers and the other albino. Also the outside of the fins look whiteish.

Questions;

1) Is this fin rot? Could it also cause the other albino to be swimming at the top of the tank like that?

2) So i assuming i will need to buy meds, if so whats the best, or are they all effective? And will it affect any of the other fish who arent suffering?

3) Will the meds kill any bacteria in my filter? Im assuming they will because they kill the bacteria on the fish causing the fin rot, but need confirmation off someone. If it does, should i take the two media cartridges out of my filter and place them in a jar of tank water, along with one of the two sponges? And keep topping the water up regularly to keep the temperature up.

5) In relation to the question above. How long will the meds last, so that i can put my media back in the filter?

6) If it is fin rot, why only two of the albinos, why not the other one or any of the other fish? Could it be possible they had it when in the shop?

7) Could the fin rot be causing my albino to swim funny (as in video)?

Sorry for all the questions, complete newbie to fish diseases/problems.

Need to look at your stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
The fuzz on the fish does it look fluffy.
The corys are not right at all, very prone to bacterial infections.
The cory shouldnt be at the top of the tank.

Last time i checked (last friday), all my stats were 0, apart from nitrate which was 10. Which is what they were the week previously too - water change between though.

Il check them now and post back my results. Can you answer any of my other questions on the list?

As for fluffiness, i guess so.

Bacterial infection in your tank, myxazin and pimafix.
No it should kill your bacteria in the filter.
Any red edging to the tail or red streaks.
Only thing you take out of the filter is your black carbon.

Ok, hopefully Pets at Home will have those things.

"No it should kill your bacteria in the filter." - it will kill the bacteria in my filter, or it wont? I dont want to have to re-cycle lol.

There are no red edging or streaks.

Oh well only one of my two cartridges has carbon in, so il just take that out, so thats easily done.

Water stats as of now:

ammonia - 0
nitrite - 0
nitrate - ~10

Temperature a stable 27oC. Do weekly 25% water changes, treat water before i add to aquarium. pH stable around 6.0.

Meds can knock stats abit but they shouldn't wipe the bacteria colony out.
The corys to be honest sound in a bad way and dosn't sound like they will make it.
Good luck.

I think the one in the video is going to die, hes still at the top of the tank, will be stationary in a verticle position for like minutes and will then swim to the side, always at the top of the tank though. The other one that i mentioned that likes the air stone, hes now at the bottom with the other corys so i think hes okay.

Dont think hes going to survive the poor little thing, going to wake up to another dead albino like last week :(

One last question. Do i need both myxazin and pimafix, or just one of them?

Thanks for your help.

Both meds will be fine.
Good luck.

Hes still alive and kicking. But its hard to tell if hes worse, he isnt doing what he was doing yesterday, but hes just lying about alot more, on the plants and sand etc. Going to get some stuff for fin rot now, hopefully i can save him. He looks worse for wear.

Right. Did a 20% water change and added some King British Fin Rot and Fungus control to the tank - P@H didnt have either myxazin or pimafix. I stuck a hatchery thing in my tank and hes now in there. Doesnt look too good at all, fluffy stuff all over the underside of him. Hasnt moved for a while but is still alive.

He died :(

Hopefully i can save my other Albino from fin rot. Why do i always lose the baby smaller ones outa the bunches iv bought. :(

Sorry for your loss, I just lost my Redcap to finrot as well. It's important to remember that with each fish we lose the other fish gain a more knowledgeable owner.

Best of luck with saving the others.

Sorry bless him R.I.P.
