Hello, I am thinking about fish for my new tank, these are all the ones a i like.

The fish shop in lossiemouth said he has most fish that I would like so I am going there in a couple of weeks. I have read up on some of the fish but sometimes cant find stuff on compatability.

I know there are loads of questions on the forum like this but they were other peoples questions.

I like:

Zebra Plecos, Rainbow fish, cichlids, discus, gouramis, neons, x-ray tetras, danios.

I am not sure if the cichlids would get on with what I have already because they are terratorial, and I don't know if my tank is big enough for discus's.

my tank size is roughly 37 gallons. I already have, 3 x-ray tetras, 2 guppies, bala shark (soon to be given away), one silvertip and one danio. I am not sure I want more danios even though I like them.

If I got neons I would get about 8 of them (maybe more), and about 3 more x-rays, and probably another 4 -5 gupppies.

My water quality is quite soft being in the highlands and the ph is a steady 6.5 - 7.

I will have granite, caithness slate and bog wood in the tank,

Unless you are prepared to spend a lot of time and money discus are out of the matter! Discus require top of the range water quality and the water needs changed atleast once a week if not every other day!

Also zebra plecs are very very expensive too!

You've good taste in fish... B)

However:
IMO the tank is a bit small for discus, also, they need quiet tank mates - so probablly not danios, for example. I've generally hears 50 litres per fish and they can only be kept in pairs as adults - better getting a shoal of juvenilles. Also, they are £££. But lovely. I don't keep them myself, but intend to get some when (if) we ever finish redecorating our living room, so I've researched them a bit, but have no experience.
Zebra pleco's I think are really expensive. I've not seen a "real" one, only pics -you're likely to have a problem finding them? I think someone else might help you more with that one!!
There are loads of different types of cichlids, so need to know specific breeds - you probablly looking at new world ones, as they generally like soft acid water. Any idea on particular type, size, etc?
Neons, x-ray tetras and danios are all shoaling fish, and need the company of a group of their own kind to make them feel happy and secure. They should be fine in the water chemistry you have to offer though.
Gourami's - again there are a few different types, which grow to different sizes. Was there one kind in particular you like?
Best of luck, let me know your thoughts!!

From what I know, Zebra Plecs require (prefer) species specific tanks.
And then the larger Rainbow fish (Red, New Guinea, Boesmani) would do much better in a tank of 50 gals upwards as they are very fast and extremely active swimmers. In my opion of course

just wanted to say, thats the fish shop i always use

how about angels and/or dwarf cichlids, guarmis, and rainbow fish, you really should be more specific than "cichlids",

I like the Cobalt cichlids and these

But I am unsure about which gouramis, dwarf gouramis are cool, I used to have a blue gourami. anything colourful.

If zebra plecs are £45 I dont think I will get one.

I dont want fish that get massive at biggest about 8 cm

If zebra plecs are £45 I'd definatly get some! That's a right steal for a zebra plec. The pretty much minimum you get them for right now is £100!!

About the fish, I'm no good at that ... so will leave that up to others.

cool angel. I haven't been yet. what's it like?

he is going to take my bala off me when it's bigger.

its quite a big room through the back of the shop and he mostly has tetras and most community fish.
he has some lovely discus too. i havent been for 5 weeks now so dont know his current stock, but take a look through the other side to where the goldies are and theres lots of bigger catfish and oscars.

here angel you'll never guess where I got my tank.

Good old scotads, lol

i'm always looking at the green scotads but everything is either aberdeen or inverness :-(
you got a great bargain there though. i'm trying to get a decent, cheap one too before hubby comes back

The cobalt cichlids could work but you should research info on mbuna, unfortunately they can only be kept with other mbuna and possibly certain catfish, I think the pick you posted is of a tropheuos those are very hard to keep very delicate fish.

If you want the cobalt you still have a large variety of choices although almost all mbuna, or plus loaches or pleco or synodontis
