Hi all,

Seeing as I'm new here i thought i'd post pics of my babies!

I would like your help please. I know my male is a veil tail but i wouldn't know how to describe his colouring? any ideas??

This is Red he was my first betta. He's really wimpish!
(sorry if the pics are big - don't know how to make them smaller)

And this is my female. Her fins are a bit raggy from the LFS. How would i describe her? The pic doesn't show it but the tips of her fins are slightly pink.

Thanks for looking!

Thanks for the names guys! Opal it is then!

What colouration would you say they both are?

Also is my female a veiltail? (if she is indeed a female and I've not been taken for a fool at my lfs! lol)

Ah so that is what an ovipositor would look like then!

Phew!

I have done some research and would say that my male is your common multicolour veil tail and my female is a blue cambodian.

Would you agree?

I'd guess that your lovely girl is more likely a pastel. In that picture she seems to have a fair amount of blue pigment visible on her body, and from what I've seen blue cambodians generally don't; their bodies tend to be entirely white.

ETA: More information on blue cambodians can be found here.

Thats not a female, its a male! I'm sure of it! Look at its caudal fin, see how its droopy? It looks like it was long at one point, but maybe he got into a fight or whatnot. And I know you can't tell what gender a betta is by their body shape, but I'm positive that it has the body shape of a male...its just something about it that makes it a male. But I guess the only way you'll find out is if its fins start growing. :dunno:

I would still shy away from making a 100% positive ID on either side, really, because females can have surprisingly long fins at times. I do know what Meg means by having the "shape" of a male, since he/she doesn't appear to be carrying any eggs right now, but I still lean toward female because that looks a lot like an oviposter to me ->

I hope she's a female, she was sold to me as one and was in a community tank of about 15 others so I'm assuming she is.

Thing is I don't really trust the fish store i got her from. They keep very overstocked tanks and male bettas in tiny jares about the size of my hand. Then today I heard an assistant saying to a customer 'yeah this test result means you have some ammonia in the water. how long have you had water in the tank? a week? ok you can start putting fish in now' OOh i was sooo angry! :grr:

There lovely, i prefer female betta's to males, how many females can you keep together.

I think they say more than 3 but I'm not sure about the upper limit!

You can keep between 4 and 6 female bettas together in a 10 gallon (nothing smaller,) but how many you can keep together is only limited by tank size :)
