inside jobs...the outside ones always give such a vague range of temperature, ok for a quick check to make sure its not way out though.

although in my big tank the inside jobs get knocked off so i have none and just have me temp gun handy.

at work we use the digital outside ones that have a probe, there good but none of them come in degree F.

I have thermometre stickers on all my tanks; very accurate, have a wipe-able suface/easy to clean and don't get in the way  .

I use both the stick on outside one and the inside one..you can never be too careful with temperature..

I also like the outside ones. They are very easy to read, and pretty accurate. In a few of my tanks I have an inside one..but the fish like to knock it around so I always have to go looking for it to see what temperature it is!

I've been using electronic thermometers for several months that stick on the outside of the tank and have a probe on a wire that goes in the water.

However, I noticed recently that the temperature of Martha's tank seemed to be fluctuating wildy from 22 to 28 degrees so I got a second opinion from another electronic thermometer which gave a totaly different reading, as did a third and a fourth.

So now I've replaced all the seemingly unreliable electronic thermometers with traditional internal glass ones and now I'm confident that the temperature I'm seeing bears relevence to the temperature of the water.

The stick on flat thermometers are usless to me as I'm colourblind.

I found some nice small inside tank battery powered ones - no probes or anything, they just sucker inside the water like the glass ones. Wish I could find some more they are so easy to use. And they make great little perches for shrimps, snails, loaches.... etc etc!!

i'ved seen these on ebay quite recently.

Sirminion

So are you saying the probe type thermonmeters are no good. I am currently cycling my first ever tank and have been using both a battery powered digital thermometer which has a probe and also the stick on the outside type although there has been a discrepency between them of 1.5 degrees celsius i wasn't too sure which was duff but going by what people are saying they both could be and an internal glass one is the way to go, what do you all reckon ?

I don't know about all of them, but the brand I had several of, which cost £7 from 'The Range' turned out to be hopelessly inacurate.
I would think (and hope) that spending a little more would get you a more reliable product.

And Welcome to TFF! :hi:

I can't remember the brand of the ones Sir describes but we matched it up against an inside job and it was spot on.

i'll find out when i'm next at work and re post.

I had to buy my infra red tamp gun for my lizards but for 25 quid it's the most accurate you will get and very useful during water changes on big tank to make sure the temperature is still up.

I,ve 3 difrent digital themometers, probe, pen, and the new ones thay fit on the glass inside the tank, all three read the same.
The glass ones can be out by as much as a degree, and i wont even use the strips that stick on the glass.
I'm slowly replaceing the glass themometers with digital, that stick on the glass inside the tank, car'nt fault them accurate, easy to read and no anoying wire that get tangeled arrrrrr.
