There Is A Snail In My Tank, How Did It Get There?!

Hi,

Have had my first tank for a few weeks now and recently added my fish. All is going well now but have just spotted a snail crawling up the side of my tank!!
How the hell did it get there?
Do I need to get rid of it?
If I do need to get rid of it should I be using some sort of preventitive measure to ensure I don't get any more?

that happend to me, you got live plants? thats where mine came from, so i just cleaned the plants really hard again and then they were gone, and not nessisarly have to go, but in large numbers they can be a nusanse

hopefully you get it quick enough so they dont sporn(sp), but if you got the space you could add a snail eatter, the common and fav (as far as i can tell) is the pigmy puffer.
which require snails in their diet to keep their becks right !?!
which i think are ace but havnt got

Howdy!

I just had the same thing happen with my first tank at 2 months old. That day, my roomate had been telling me about how when she was a kid, she talked her parents into a couple snails for their goldfish tank, and withing a couple months they had swarms and it was a mess. I laughed and told her I went for Amano Shrimp for my invertebrates to avoid that problem. Later that day, I was checking out my fish and there were 2 snails I had never seen moving across my rocks. They must have come in with my plants and stayed hidden for the past two months.

Anyway, I added a very happy Yoyo Loach who aside from being one of the coolest fish in my tank, has also proven to have a taste for snails!

Overall, snails are an annoyance that can be taken care of pretty easily.

That happens a lot to me but i have 4 fish that eat them

3 Clown loachs and a plec
