The Water Smells Horrible :s

ok ,
ive had my 30 litre set up for about 3 months now... all going smotthly and is homed to 5 pygmy corise and a dwarf puffer fish, but when i was doing a water change i noticed the water smelt horrible, i cant describe what it smells like but its gross. about four days ago i droped the temperature from 28 to 26 ... i havent added any new fish or any plants.. im totaly stumped i dont get why the water smells
there wasnt much surface agitation, but there never has been ... i suppose the water was quite still, soo could it be stagnent?
the fish are fine no change in behavior atall i have done a 50 pecent water change but it still reeks ?

sorry if im unclear about this
is there any product that could help ... or any thing i can do ... i was planning on a 50 percent wc every day untill it stops (is this wise?)

you could probably pop in some carbon in the filter. that might help

as for what causes the smell, did you clean the filter media at all since you've had it? alot of detritus gets stuck in the filter media and it sometimes stinks.

er it smell like the water in the shop i dont use

i cant say what its smel of but its just an over powering honk that makes me wretch

er there has been carbon in the filter for about 2 weeks

i clean filter media every 2 weeks in old tank water

carbon lasts about a day and becomes exhausted...adding fresh may get rid but pin pointing the cause would be better.

no dead fish in there

no rotting flesh or plants

ill givce an updat tomorow after a waterchange

Did you disturb your sand recently? Normally stuff with get stuck in there and you should agitate that every now and again. When you do you will get a eggy smell from it.

it get disturbed when wc i suppose ,

i dont know if it was smelly before i water changed... i didnt notice it then, it was when the water i shyphoned was in the bucked that i noticed it

i would wack an air stone in their and make sure there is lots of surface agitation...i think you may have disturbed some anearobic gas(hydrogen sulphide) lethal but is instantly harmless when it comes into contact with oxygen rich water like the water in out tanks, it goes through a chemical change where it takes on oxygen and creates water and sulphur oxide, so oxygen levels may have dipped. sulphur oxide is giving the eggy smell.

yes the spray bar will help.

the best test IMO is to see whether the fish are gasping

none are .... i just checked

one of the cories was bearthing fast yesterday ... and i saw 2 swim quickly to the surface and then back to the substrate level ....

ill sort it of with an air pump ... thanks
