so im moving, and tagging along my 2x 10g Betta tanks, and 1x 14g Female Betta Tank, however i now i have room and have conned my way into getting a 55gallon tank...

i want to build a Low Maint tank, and i want it to be active/schooling...

i am a photog, and not only work a Full Time job, as well as out and about doing my photography so i need something that is not crazy on demand...

ive just about got everything listed out to start buying...

for my filter im looking at a FX5 as well as an hang on back to run activated carbon to help clean out any left over crap..

live stock

im looking to go 2 diff ways... but ive got a bit of a peve, it must be active & or schooling....and NO angels, i for some reason i cant keep angels alive past the first month... lol

im looking possibly a Fresh Water Shark Tank, as they seem to active alot..

or getting several small tropicals, like a few large schools of Tetra's / Barbs / Corydoars and some top dwelling guppies or mollies

...

live stock is my main issue, if u guys could help out? suggestions?

have you checked into bosemani rainbows? They're suposed to be very active and they're schooling fish. Worth looking into atleast if you haven't already

I've only kept two types of barbs- Rosies and Black Rubies, they're both very active but the rosies don't school very well (they just spread out) Meanwhile the Rubies often swim in a prober school (looks very impressive) while I think they may look a little bit small in your tank, and rosies are temperate, It's worth looking at.

I'm afraid I'm still new to fish keeping but I try to help when I can. so thats my penny of input (not quite worth 2 cents :) )

Edit: spelling - though i still don't think I got it all right

Neons are active, and like to be in shoals.

Though tetras arent quite hardly, a bit fussy about water conditions.

man if it wasnt for Cichlids getting so big and need a lot of attention, id love to fix a 55g "Yellow lab" tank ...

I guess if im doing my math right.... i could do a African Cichlid Community...

6 cynotilapia red top dwarf afra chimate
4 electric yellow lab
3 bumblebee - ps. crabro
1 common pleco ( i can move him from my one of my beta tanks and replace him with a BN for the beta tank..)

with the right amount of hiding spots id be good to go

I sometimes slack with my tank and my glowlight tetras are very active and schooling, also go well with brown pencilfish that are great top dwellers very relaxed but amazing to watch - best in schools of 8+

I have got 15 Black Ruby Barbs in my 300l and they look AMAZING now that they have coloured up nicely. They shoal properly (although this may be due to the larger fish that they share their home with) and are always active. A great addition to the tank.

Oh and an FX5 might be overkill on a 55g. I would have thought that a 405 might be a better choice.

Yah fx5 is overkill, butt better overkill than struggling
