This is kind of strange so bare with me while I explain the latest saga in my juwel 260 planted community tank.
Until about 2 weeks ago all was going well until a sudden baterial infection wiped out some of my favourite fish. I was a little late in treating from the first death and in the end lost 2 skunk cories, 1 female krib, 3 guppies, 1 swordtail, 1 glass cat and my favourite fish, my pink gourami
(The odd thing is none of the fry seem to have perished, 10+ kribs, 8+ bristlenoses and a stray baby guppy! But thats for another tale)
I have since been treating with Myxazin (sp?) and hopefully the death toll has stopped, but over the last few days I have noticed the strangest behaviour from my male Kribensis and male GB Ram. These two were initially intollerant of each other in their respective territories, the GBR had lost his female companion quite some time prior to the kribs being introduced but had an established area of the tank. Once the kribs bread they became quite nomadic and roamed the tank warrying all the other tank mates (including the GBR). Anyway since the demise of the female krib the male became quite reclused and skittish (probably due to bacteria and medication etc.) Yesterday after 7 days of treating the tank I performed a large 50%+ water change, removed all plants and decor and thouroughly vac'd the gravel prior to re-scaping and refilling. Since then I have noticed that the male krib and ram (both of which seem to be otherwise acting normally, eating etc.) seem to follow each other around like buddies!!!???!! Now as these cichlids are not even from the same continent I find it very odd that they would not only tolerate, but actively follow each other around the tank. There has been no signs of agression from either fish so I don't think they are testin geach other. Could it be that due to the tank re-arrangement that they are just weighing each other up before claiming new territories?
I can honestly say that this is the strangest behaviour from these two fish, are they trying to breach the gap between racial tensions from South Africa and South America?
Whatever the cause I just hope they have bothed pulled through this epidemic I have experienced, I very nearly felt like de-commissioning my tanks altogether at one point and calling it a day but its moments like these, and the joy and entertainment received from this hobby that keep you inthralled in fish keeping.
If anybody can shed some light on this odd behavior, other than I have homosexual cichlids
would be greatly apreciated, but I just thought I would share thise quite odd experience with you all.
Cheers,
Bricko
