The Real Cost Of Fishkeeping......

i mujst of spent about £6000 tho its not all been my money, i set tank up for people as a small business :) and i love it, tho it dont pay me 2 well, so its more of a 2nd job.

Not too bad at all really compared to the rest.

Probably about £400 all in.

Fairly new to the hobby though and have caught the bug so this question will be a lot more painful to answer in a year or so!!!

hmmm..I don't know... the question seems to me rather like those surveys they run in the papers ever so often about the cost of childrearing. It always seems to work out that the cost of looking after our two children is considerably more than our joint income. So I can relax in the safe knowledge that I am never going to be forced to spend that much.
Same with my fish- if I haven't got it I can't spend it. And it's a fair bet that no 14-year-old of mine will be in a position to spend thousands of dollars on any hobby however worthy.

Haha, too late for my parents. :shifty:

But that's the thing with fishkeeping. You can't stop - it's not like you 'finish' your tank. There's always some fish you want to keep or some plant you want to remove.

That's why it's so much fun!

oh i dont even want to think about it..the tanks( 1 big, 1 small, 1 teeny hosp) 4 filters, heaters, co2 thingy, to start off with, then the fish, plants, plants & more plants to replace the dead plants, food, meds, water treatments....................the list goes on & on but i dont care i LOVE having our fish in our house & cant imagine life without them now & we've only been doing this for about 3 & 1/2 yrs.

er lots but roughly

Rio 180 £600-700
Rekord 60 - £300 ish
50G Cube - £100 - yeah silly isn't it. (2nd hand tank and filter, got all hardwear for £50)

then probably another £100 worth of food, ferts, spare tubes etc in the cupboard.

hi

thanks to a very kind person on here i managed to get my 3ft 20 gal tank with hood, light and filter for £50 (second - possibly third hand lol)

i spent about £70 last weekend getting gravel, heater, water treatment, test kits, rubber mats for underneath, buckets, syphon, thermometer and ammonia.

will see what this weekend brings as i'm hoping to get some decorations.

my fish shouldn't be too expensive as i just want to start easy with some guppies once cycled and then once the tank has settled for a few months some neons.

so i dont think i've done too badly so far lol

love ales xx
If your in England you can definately double the price. My tank ,hood , fiter and lighting cost me £3.20. Master test kit £22. Fish food £2.86 so think yourselves lucky my American friends lol.

First tank... 70 pounds plus 30 pounds delivery...

realising it was too big and would fall through the floor...... Priceless

Secon tank 600 quid (thank you daddy) that included the filter light ect...

and i`ve just been and spent about 60 quid on stuff today...

Don't forget the other big thing about fishkeeping- that you CAN stop, that you can, to a certain extent, adapt your level of spending to the money available. Remember, not all the members on this forum, and not all the parents of forum members are well off.

All tanks, fish, medications, plants/ornaments, and general maintanance so far has probably passed £1,000 now, but its all worth it. And, its spread out over the years, so on a monthly basis its not too expensive.

ha ive managed the least so far cuz its my firsf tank

4.5 uk gallon systemised tropic tank £50
fine smooth river gravel £4.00
2 funny plants (one looks like duckweed?!?) £5.00
1 fake plant (like a spawn mop) £1.50
thermometer £3.00
water treatment, water test and other chemicals £20 ish
mat £1.00
japanise black river stones £3
1x 1" bronze cory £1.49
2x 1" AT barbs £3.50
1x 1" RTB shark (but we took him back when we found out what it actually was) £2.00
total: £95
plus water etc

and ive had it for about running with fish for 3 weeks ish lol

My food bill alone runs about $120 a month. I don't even want to think about how much I've spent on fish in a whole over the years. It's easily in the thousands. I just dropped around $550 this week alone converting a tank to marine...and I don't even have my $700 lights yet. Insanity.

2.5G Tank - £11
Filter - £11
Heater - £11
Gravel/stones - £1.50
Silk plants - £4.50
Fish - £10
Food - £3

So, £49, not bad, except I only have £3 of fish left...

I would say thousands seen as i've been nearly 3 years in the hobby, but worth the money enjoy watching the fish, relaxing so worth every penny.

Why not? There are much worse things that money can be spent on by teenagers (drugs, alcohol), I think every kid should have a hobbie, and if they have the money to spend on the hobbie, then they should be aloud to spend it.
