Well my guppy was dead this morning  I posted last night with regard to fin rot. So both male and female guppy have died leaving one small guppy that is well pregnant.. Well I was sold it as a guppy..but I have bought a book on live bearers and was shocked to find this..... The fish in my tank pretending to be a dosile guppy is really a Gambusia Affinis... flipin eck.. sorry i'm from yorkshire..lol .. and what's really anoying is it clearly states this fish should never be kept in a comunity tank as they are very aggressive!!.. well you don't say .. no wonder it knipped my poor guppys to an early grave. Now I'm stuck with the monster and its pregnant, due to drop any day  .. I have put it in my end tank so it can't bother any other fish.. but what I'm going to do with it and its offspring I have no idea.. Any one in the yorkshire area interested in it?
Do you think If I ring the shop and explain they will take it back? I'm new to all this returning fish melarky :dunno:
Any advice greatfully received :fun:

im not from that area, not even close. if i did i wouldnt minde takeing them. i guess u can take them back to the store, but i cant garantie that u'll get ur money back. u can always try auqua bid or sumthin, maybe u can aution them off.

 Uh-Oh......Well you should probally try to get rid of it before it has it's offspring. The pet store probally will take it back but make sure you let them know that it is pregnent, good Luck! ~Scarlett

Hi the fish you have is also called the mosquito fish if the father of the fry is a fancy guppy I would keep it

I have seen on a guppy forum that if you cross these fish with fancy guppies that you get extra large fancy guppy fry they did sugest crossing a male gambusia with a female guppy as the males are less aggressive

If you keep her keep us updated on her fry ....

EDIT: Pm'ed you a link of the other forum

Yes I'm going to keep her.. thanks for the info I read through the other forum and it makes interesting reading. I have a new 3.5 gallon tank comming tomorrow so will set it up using gravel//plants//water from my main tank then when its settled I will put her in .. and wait to see what pops out..lol Should be interesting

Thanks guys  I'll post with details of the outcome.
Just hope they are not all so bad tempered, but she seems happy with grump Gourami hes too big to bully and they seem to be happy in each others company, so may be an almost happy ending... :hey:

That is nice looking tank...where did u get that...i have never seen one like that

**Fishy Update**

After consulting with the shop where I bought this fish I have decided to send this fish to Fishy heaven :-( . The shop said I could return it and get replacemets for my guppys but if I did return the fish they would only destroy it and it offspring as there is no market for them. So it seems silly to allow this fish to give birth to then only have to destroy all of them wether they are crossed with guppys or not.

So If anyone wants this fish , for some reason then please speak up now, but I'f I don't hear anything I will humanely kill it on saturday. I hear the best way to do this is to put it into a bag with water and crushed ice? any other info would be appreciated! :dunno:

well, if thats wat u wanna do, i wouldn't mind takeing it but im not sure where u live. i too am interested in how u got that cool lookin tank.

Do you live in England?????(Yorkshire) if so they have nice tanks over there..... My Dad in law has a tank like that but its only one....I wish I had his tank and the fish..... that makes me miss England and my family (in-laws)!!!!

Re sending fish to fishy heaven..... I had to do this for a poor bloated guppy recently, I had to use the water in the freezer method cos I couldnt face any other (like cutting its head off).... I put in a little tuperware dish, with lid on and popped in freezer.... threw the whole lot in dustbin the following morning.

I have read this is not a nice thing to do to a fish, but well....... I cant cut their heads off either.

iv heard u can just overdose them on stress meds. to kill them. the ice water is pretty humain ans long as u do in in ice water enstead of just puting it in water and then into the freezer, that is not humain.

i have kinda the same tank he has only its just a singel octagon thing. im gunna haveta buy my aquariums in england.

well gl with ur fish problem :D

For future reference, the way to tell these apart from guppies is the scales have black on the edges.

Thanks for all the comments :fun:
Well I bought a small 3 gallon tank , my intention was to use it for my guppy fry.lol wishfull thinking :( .. so the little monster is in there., and the other fish have the full 3 tanks to go at again, which they are well pleased about I can tell you.
I hate putting any animal to sleep for whatever reason and when its super health its even harder. But the vicious little sucker is growing on me..lol So i'm going to let it have its fry, I've put lots of hiding places and weed in its tank so we'll see what survives ;) .
It had live food for tea last night.. a cleg (Like a small mossy) found its way into the tank , attrackted by the water/light I expect and you should have seen this fish eat it.. My god it was scary!.. it bit of the head and spit that out, then chewed a little and spat out the legs..lol
Just think.. a whole tank of these things..lol noshing away !!

I think the main ways to tell the difference from guppy is ..
a: silver and black eyes
b: a very flat head, continuing to a longer and slimer than average tail.

I see no evidence of black on its fins, buts that is not doubt due to the fact this fish is a yougster . Just over an inch long. They can breed from 8 weeks old, or so the book says. I'm just iterested to see what its bred with as it was imported with guppy you would expect it to be that. But I can't see how any male guppy got near enough to this fish to mate with it..lol time will tell.

The tank..............
Bought of e.bay uk.. cost me £190 I understand they had a showcase at the ideal home exhibition where the 3 tank version sold for about £400  Its nice but not that nice..lol They also do a 2 tank version and a 1 tank . each tank holds just over 4 gallon and the fish just love the tubes  My tetras tear up and down them like its a F1 track...lol But due to the size its only suitable for the smaller fish types. I believe its only available in the UK and can be found on the net HERE and a few other places if you do a search. This was the cheapest place I found other than the guy on e.bay. If anyone wants his details drop me a line, he sells a few different types all brand new and boxed UK only.

well im glad u have desided to keep the fish. i know its a lil monster but like sum one else said if she was mated by a guppy the result could be real big guppys, and thats a good thing.
