The taricha (Snoopy)is the more outgoing of the two.The firebelly (Fireball) is more reclusive.Snoopy enjoys eating bloodworms and other treats from a spoon and even clung to the spoon for a little ride.So far Fireball seems uninterested in the food I offer and has eaten only ghost shrimp. There are shrimp and small guppies in the tank but I worry that he's not getting what he needs. He does enjoy nestling in the plants and lurking under the bridge  I am still fixing up his home and adding little things. Both seem to prefer water over land so far, though Fireball climbs up the glass now and then.

Discomafia...any insight on feeding the firebelly would be great.I am offering frozen bloodworms, and brineshrimp,as well as newt pellets and live mealworms.Snoopy loves the mealworms but Fireball doesn't touch them.I am wondering if he prefers to eat on land...sort of grasping at straws there...

Thanks

Yayyyyy and yippee!!!!

I bought some small live crickets and both newts like them :p I got a little mini baster just for newt feeding.I used it to hoosh a cricket down to the firebelly and he gobbled it right up.I am so happy

Glad to see it worked. I used to do that too, as a treat only. Have you tried feeding tubifex worms? I have some in cubes, and I cut 1 cube up into 6 pieces, and attach it to a thin piece of those twistable rubber wire thingies that come with electronics and are used to hold the cables in place.

So one end has the piece of tubifex worm, and I am holding on to the other. I usually feed him underwater but sometimes I place some bloodworms in the land area (bogwood) and he usually finds it. Not many newts will turn down bloodworms, so just give him a while and he'll get used to it. I've also read that newts can't digest plant matter and are strictly carnivorous, so maybe you shoudn't try feeding him algae tabs like I once did.

Are you sure he's a male, how did you sex him? Using the caudata.org site on FBN's I assume?

Good thing you noticed Fireball enjoys lurking under the plants and brigde, I noticed that mine likes places to hide, so I gave him a couple of caves and PVC " T " joints, and he seems to love 'em. They like to feel secure so I guess that caves and PVC are the best thing to soothe them. Also getting a background for your tank is good, I've just never gotten around to doing it.

Make sure the gravel in there isn't small enough for either of the newts to swallow, and you're fine. Hope you enjoy your two new pets, and looking foward to seeing pics of them!

Haven't sexed them(yet).I just use the he/him because it's easy

I'm gradually adding more plants as he really seems fond of them.I am going to make a shelter of some sort on the bridge too as he seems to like to come out of water at times.I've seen him nesting on plant tops above water, and of course, climbing the glass :D

I got the medium to large smooth pebbles as I'd read about the delicate skin and the risk of swallowing gravel.I'll keep offering a variety of foods and I'll try the twisty wire thing for dangling worms.I'm really enjoying getting to know these little critters and can already envision getting hooked on them

Thanks for all the great info :)

Good idea getting those river stones, I use a lot of them too. :)

How to sex them? Basically you can only check whether they have swollen testes or not.

This website has some good info on newts, as well as other animals...

Where did you find the mini baster? Have been looking for one. What brand? Thanks, Sandy

Sexing depends on what speashes you have.
