so my he she betta rayne his a mysterious betta indeed. when i bought it from wal mart it was supposed to be girl. but i had many said she had male characteristics. i did reserch females, and she looks like a female vail tail. it developed a white spot, and got bigger after meeting jasper my very male betta. she does strip, when stressed in both directions. when stressed she had two = kind of strips. normally she has a few || kind of stripes on her.
but yesterday she started to build a bubble nest ?! this little one has got me so confused. it is still young but it would be nice to finally have a what rayne is.

this is a preivous post on tail types

Pretty sure it is a female due to the short fins and egg spot. It is not unusual for females to make nests.

Is she in the same tank as the male or is it divided?

I'm sorry, but this is a ridiculous comment to make! have you never heard of pk (plakat) bettas? they are the original wild fin form and their fins are just as short as female fins.

also as has been said numerous times on here, the "egg spot" is not a definate sign of a female, many young (and some full grown) males have them.

and young submissive males will also show "breeding bars" of the type shown

this is Gemini guarding his eggs

you can clearly see the "egg spot" just behind his ventrals and the shortness of his fins, and before i bought him he had been involved in a spawn attempt with another male and showed "breeding bars" but was (obviously) never successfully bred

although having said that, in those photo's rayne looks female to me, although she doesn't look VT. the edges of her caudal fin (tail) are straight, not curving in towards each other, and the anal fin looks too neat and well defined. i think this topic is better in terms of identifying female tail types

i have heard of pks and for a long while thats what i suspected rayne of being.
she seems to respond well to her betta neighbors. first my late great livingston, and now jasper. she even flared for the first time at jasper, although no where as impresive as jasper or livs.

i wasn't meaning you hun, i know that that is why you were concerned. my response was to crazycatfish saying that just because it has short fins its a girl.

p.s i forgot to add in my earlier post. she looks delta tail to me

hey my MGHM female makes her own tiny nests when she is in the chimney waiting for the male to make his nest.

but she is also one very horney betta so

see i think she and jasper would make a lovely couple, she was just to young for me to attempt it. maybe the bubble nest is a sign that maybe she is finally ready. however i am not ready lol. bettas cute funny can drive a person crazy.
