over the winter months i have lost 3 fish and almost lost 1 to this "mystery disease" one male sailfin died from dropsy... in 0,0,20 - and at the same time one female molly got popeye in 0,0,20

in my smaller tank 2 platys died in the same hour from unknown causes in 0,0,40

they have all been buried far out of the reac of the cat BTW

so what the heck is going on? why are they getting diseases in perfect water!

It doesn't sound allot like a single disease since the fish had different symptoms when they died. So the molly is still alive? Does it still have pop-eye? That's usually caused by bacterial infections. "Dropsy" can be caused by many things, it is not a disease outright, it is a symptom (enlarged body with pine coning scales). What symptoms did the platys have?

having 'perfect' water is no guarentee of avoiding illness or infections in your fish. Pathogens or parasites will happily exist in water with no ammonia or nitrite.

i know the dropsy thing... but the platys were swimming round really happily and when i checked an hour later they were both dead - no apparent causes.. looked just as full-coloured and bodied as ever... not bloated or skinny... but they were definitely dead

surely without any ammonia or nitrite the fish would've fought it off a little? my Male sailfin wasn't too well on the day i got him and that was around 5 months ago but got a LOT better and then in his last day he rapidly deteriorated and died in one afternoon - he wasn't showing any dropsy signs in the morning though but just like with the platys i come back and he is dead... only the platys didnt die of dropsy...

when i say deteriorated i mean body language, his fin wasnt up, he sulked at the bottom of the tank and only ate a little and no matter what i did to encourage him to feed (garlic, bloodworm ETC...) he wouldn't eatmore than 1 or 2 tiny flakes that day... went on hunger strike i suppose :(

And there were other fish in the tank with them? Two fish dropping dead simultaneously with no symptoms is two poisoned fish in my book. No disease kills like that. Pyrethrins would kill like you describe with various fish species dying at different times, but somewhat simultaneously per species with similar symptoms within a species. The different species might die with different symptoms since the toxins affect them in different ways depending upon the species. It can take as long as two weeks before fish die after exposure. Pyrethrins are in all kinds of bug sprays and they are harmless to humans and most animals. They happen to be quite deadly to fish though. I got all this from here, check it out:

oh crap! my cousin was spraying her hairspray and body spray alcoholly stuff downstairs and near my tank... i will make her cough up for this....

only 2 out of my 6 platys died... the rest left in there now are female... so at least no more babies... no other fish have died so far...

however my betta is hiding a lot, has lost some parts of his fins and is very grumpy... but the last bit is how he normally is... i'm not treating for finrot as it isnt that shape of tail missing... it looks quite like it has been snagged actually...

Yeah, you don't want people spraying anything around your tank, not even air freshener. God only knows what is in some of that stuff and fish are really sensitive to some things. Pyrethrins are also in flea powder and animal shampoo. I won't put my hands in the tank after I give my daughter's puppy a bath because the scent of the shampoo is still so permeated into my skin. Even after showering I won't touch the dog and then say feed the fish without washing my hands, but I really don't feed the fish without washing my hands first anyway. Maybe I'm paranoid, but it just seems all too easy to put some tiny amount of some deadly toxin in the tank. The pyrethrin thing freaked me out because of the 2-week time delay.

EDIT: Oh yeah, windex is another fish killer.
