Does anyone know if there are any species in this genus were the female doesn't have an overhanging snout ??

Or is it possible for them not to develop the overhanging snout untill they're older ??

Also, are ALL females bloched ??

Thanks.

EDIT : just added another question..

Were the experts ??? i.e Ferris & Dawn !! ... i see waterbender about someitmes but Ferris and Dawn have gone ?!?! dissapered ?!?! sold us out ?!?! got new hobbies ?!?!

:-( :(

 Not seen Dawn around for a while but i'm still here. Work is giving me little free time at the moment but i'm always about. :fun:

To answer your Q's - all Labeotropheus have the overhanging nose, it's the distinction of the genus and i'm fairly certain all females are blotched or at least mottled - i've certainly never seen any otherwise. :good:

Lol .. Cool, GdGd !! :D

Yea thats i thought after doing some research.. i asked because were i get some of my fish from, there was a a trio of wild caught Labeotropheus Trewavasae 1m and 2f in a tank, but the two females dint have a overhanging snout nor were blotched or mottled, they were just plain light brown with a faint yellow line on the edge of their fins....

I went to ask if they were the females but the guy who normally deals with cichlids was away, so i asked his colleuge (who deals with the marine side), she said her knowledge on cichlids wasnt up to scratch but is sure they're the females.

The male looked really nice thought but the females put me off with not having a overhangin snout... Ill have to pop back in tomorrow maybe.

Thanks :good:

How old were the fish? - I have seen plenty of non-descript juvies that later develop the usual colouration.

Ok no worries ... they didnt look like her though .. the lady i spoke too proberbly told me wrong :S , infact i know she has now lol. Im going back tomorrow anyway if not friday. Thanks for your help.

I'm still around. :) I just haven't been on as much lately. My mom passed away at the end of January, and I'm preparing to move a couple of states away at the end of summer, so I've been really busy. In fact, in the next couple of weeks I'll be posting in the buy & sell section to rehome all of my fish and sell my tanks. I'm bummed out, but it's just not feasible to take the fish with me, too long of a drive and I'll be having a moving company move everything. Oh well, I'm sure I'll set up at least one tank when I get settled in, and I'll still be lurking around here. :hey:

Sounds like Ferris answered your question, so I guess I don't have anything to add there.

Blimey !! ... Good to see you posting again. :good:

Sorry to hear about your mom and having to sell-up though ... Im sure youll set back up once your move is done with, .. and share with us on here :hyper: Will you be staying on the African side ? or havnt you thought that far ahead yet ? ..

Good to see you back Dawn. :good:

It's good to be back Ferris, so many new people around here.

Darrel, I'm sure I'll set up at least one tank after I've settled in to my new house, and it will definately be mbuna. I was wanting to set up a custom 300-500 gal, but I'm not sure if that will work out, water is very expensive where I'm moving. So I may end up going a little smaller, I'm thinking maybe going with a p.crabro species tank. The female I have is really my favorite fish and I'm gutted about having to rehome her.
