I think what was meant by that was that other fish also eat fish :p

Personaly, when it comes to PETA, I do agree that they are over-the-top in what they do and say but, in a way, i think they are right. I mean think of it this way - what if a chipanzee decided to breed humans for food and developed an especialy fast-growing, fat breed or what if they bred 'miniature' humans as companion pets but which could never survive without the chimp. I mean I know that's a slightly bizarre analogy but I think it gets the point across. Plus think of how many fish headed for the pet trade die along the way or at the store when they would have been prefectly healthy in the wild or look at all the animals humans have 'accidentaly' released into countries they don't belong that has wiped out indiginous species or look at how we have plucked wild animals from where they belong to keep them as pets in cities with inadequate facilities to care for them as well as they would have cared for themselves in the wild.

Even though I do have pets and I wouldn't give them up for the world, I think what PETA is saying is actualy right - even if I personaly would be too selfish to listen or take action like they are prepaired to.

Also, to those of you who fish and believe it causes absolutely no pain/suffering, I suggest you take a fishing rod with bait and put it in one of your tanks. Seeing as it won't harm your fish, go ahead and fish out of your tank, release them like you would do if you aren't going to kill the fish, and see what happens (granted you'll either have to go for a very small hook or have big fish in a big tank :p). BTW, I'm not saying you're wrong, I just think that those of you who realy believe you don't harm the fish you release should be prepaired then to do it to your own pets and see if this is realy the case.

In argement for fishing, humans have done so for thousands of years and did so long before modern civilization etc. IMO, as long as it is done humanely (humane killing that is - don't let the fish suffocate which actualy is done alot of the time) it is ok to do so for food. I don't like the idea of doing it for fun though. I simply can't understand why someone would be compelled to yank out a fish from where it can breathe into a world it doesn't belong in only to just throw it back in. What if it was divers pulling birds into the sea and then releasing them again. I understand the competition behind it that may make it interesting to some but, realy, I don't get it :p Of course, if people would instead be killing the fish, I guess releasing them is better.

Afraid I can't see anything wrong with hunting or fishing for food, but then I did grow up in an northernly country, where this was some of the most available food. Also, a certain amount of hunting had to be done to protect both the crops and the animals themselves, due to the decline of carnivores (now coming back). Always seemed to me that the people who fished for food did less damage than the vegetarians who imported exotic food from abroad, damaging the environment for all wildlife. I have become much more vegetarian since I moved to England, since the climate is so suitable for growing veggies (my husband has just gone up to check out on the allotment). I certainly cannot see a moral difference between killing your own fish/elks/sheep and getting the stuff from the shops.
Have to admit I could never see the point of fishing for entertainment.
