This is all news to me, as a new aquariumist - So which breeds are most likely to be dyed?
I think the MP related emails in an attempt to outlaw this may be a waste of time. It would take national awareness campaign of some considerable size to influence MPs into any action - but I will join the cause anyway.
There is something we can all do. We can demand a standard, we can demand our suppliers do not buy these fish, we can refuse to purchase from them and find alternative sources. We can ask for a level of certification for LFS's to display.....
I suppose a start would be with the RSPCA????
Anyone any other ideas on top of petitioning?

That's already happening and has been for some time

Many shops (in the UK) have in fact signed the (anti) dyed fish campaign / pledge. The PKF magazine features certain shops monthly and amongst general shop info it always states if the shop has signed the pledge or not. If in doubt, just ask your shop.

Pinned topic - have you actually read the whole thread ??

My heartfelt apologies for not reading the entire 101 post thread. (Saracasm)
Drop the strop Bloo - just because I am a newbie does not give you the right to talk to me like something you stood in. You were new to notice boards and tropical fish at some point, so take a chill pill.

I was only trying to express an interest and offer an alternative source of help.

I think Bloo was shocked/impressed that you might have read the whole thread, I think I only got to about page 3 before giving up! ;)

Other than that the post was perfectly courteous and informative.

Egmel is right ;) and you don't know me. Apologies if you somehow took offence in whatever way. It's a long thread with a lot of info. Just wanted to know if you skimmed through it or actually read the whole thread ? :)

before i get grilled,i have not read the post but for anyone reading this heres the quick answer....the goverment passed a bill to stop the mutilation of animals in britain, but theres a loop hole fish can be mutaleted(dyed) in say china and its perfectly legal then to import them into this country(uk) dyed.
our government are crap....please feel free to rip me apart now......

Umm interesting replies on this thread, i didnt pick up any 'strop' on bloo's reply, maybe its the way u read it? However, on www.practicalfishkeeping.co.uk, if u can find your LFS it will tell you whether they signed the pledge or not. My LFS has signed it but they have bright pink heart parrots so im not so sure, but they are hybrids anyway so i guess its hard to tell whether they have been dyed or bred like that. If you google the subject loads of info comes up on it, and interesting read if you have the time.

The letter to MP's was initiated before the bill was passed, the original aim of the letter was to try and get the import and sale of the fish banned too at the same time with the support of Matt Clarke from PFK magazine who also featured the very thread on his blog. Unfortunately We were way too slow in acting and the bill was passed before we could do anything.

The next step has to be to push to get the import and sale of the fish banned as law in it's own right which the original bill should help facilitate although with issues where import is involved I believe it has to be passed through Europe  so maybe writing to our MP's asking for it to be banned and also sending seperate letters to our MEP's is the next step :dunno:

If anyone has a better (realistic) idea feel free to post it, I'm sure any reasonable intelligent suggestion will get not only the support of the members on here (and other forums) but also the staff ;) and even PFK, as I'm sure we'd all like to see it stopped.

Personally i would like to name and shame the shops that sell them, perhaps if they got hit in their pockets they will think twice about it. But there are people who are not into the hobby as much as us, and as a result honestly don't know what they are buying. The bill would probably take ages to rectify.....for me boycotting the shops that sell them would be a start. If i seen these fish for sale i would play hell with the proprietors....but that's just me :shout: i would have to be the voice for these poor fish.........rant over

can't name and shame...it's against the law (in america at least) But you can go in and talk very loudy about how disgusting the process is and how sorry you feel for those poor fishies.

Probably in the uk too.But how about a list of of shops that 'DO sell them' just incase someone 'MIGHT LIKE' to buy some... :hey: nudge nudge wink wink...... If people use the list to go to the shop and complain....well its on their own steam....
