The Cost Of Running A Tank

I had a 55 gallon heated with a hang on filter and 2 lights, a 50 gallon heated with hang on filter and a light, gecko tank with a light on at all times.. plus my massive amount of electronics (computer, stereo, xbox, tv, dvd player, digital cable, phone,, u get the idea) at one point and im in Canada in a 3 bedroom decent sized house, my parents definitely arent paying NEAR a grand for electric, theyd shoot me. seriously i got like really bad luck so im used to issues like this (ex: once our water bill was 4 times what it normally is, they claimed a toilet must be running,, mmm sure.... ) id call them and see if they can come and pinpoint it, or try to work it out yourself. It could be a simple mistype, or you are being overcharged.. check it out because that is a brutally large amount of money.

I compared it to the meter and it seems to check fine but it just seems like a rediculous amount of energy for such a small house. The energy comp. eon seems to think everything is normal, of course its money in their pockets and they blame it on the electric heaters so i'm doing a little experiment over the next week and i'll do another check on the meter and compare again.

Hi, I'm in a 5 bedroom house in the UK and we pay about £400 per month for gas and electric... that's with a PC in each room, Kids who don't know what light switches do and tv's on most of the time aswell as a 4ft tank running 2 filters, lights and heater.

I thought our bill was far too high so bought one of THESE Well worth the money as you can work out exactly what each item is costing to run

£400 a month  I'd be bankrupt  we pay £75 a month for gas & electric in a 3 bed detached house, 1 server permanently on (480W psu) and my 4+ foot tank with heater etc (I reckon those are the two big elec users but we have an ancient boiler/water heater that needs replacing for something more efficient)

if any of my family read this im dead!!!

4 beds~ 7 tanks. 3 laptops1 pc, tonnes of chargers 5 tv,3 games consoles.tumble dryer, dishwasher, and as someone else said, kids that go to a school where they dont learn to switch off the lights!!or the tellies,

£380 average gas and electric per month~and rising, tho i have a large family so the hot water seems to be forever on but having said that i dont use the dishwasher anymore ( for about 2 months) only so i could get away with using the D-rated tumble dryer that i got, i have been having estimated bills since i moved in last july, and just got knocked by a £630 " catch up" gas bill-but i hvent noticed any huge change in the amount that i pay for electrictiy ( apart from supplier hikes)

Jesus... thats some serious loot. specially with your shoe choice. thats some cash!

ive never done the math out on mine because its always been pretty negligible.

sounds like you would really benefit from an efficient boiler if you don't already have one. that energy bill is over half what I pay in rent  (although that rent's soon to change into a mortgage by the noises 'her indoors is making :-( )

that does sound a lot, but it's generally filters, pumps and high output lights that drain power. having a motor running 24/7 zaps the power, youre FX5 will be drinking leccy, however i don't think it should be drinking that much.

Ouch!

My flatmate and I pay around £90 per month in total. I have 3 tanks going at the moment with a fourth on the way but the room temp is warm and I am fanatical about switching things off standby when they are not being used includingTV's surround sound, oven, micowave, laptops, phone chargers, dishwashers etc. I also have energy saving lights in all of the main rooms.

I leave the tank lights off while I am at work at swtich them on all evening.

when we had the big marine tank running along with a couple of other smaller tropical tanks, plus a small household worth of electrical equipment, ours got up to £100 a month. we have only got a v small house though.

not sure if meters run the same in the uk as in the us, but once before our meter reading guy screwed up the numbers and we got way way way over charged. what we did was grab the last bill, look at the meter numbers and then go outside and read the meter on the side of the house, found it to be way off. so we called the power company and they sent out anoter meter reading guy and then they adjusted out bill.

our last bill was 53.04, and we have a 5 bedroom huge non airtight old farmhouse with a 29 gallon 2 tens a 5 and a 20 running, and thats all the more our power bill is. and the whole winter we ran a extra heater in the babys room too. but that all was just electric, I wont get into our oil furnace bill....

thats a combined bill, by the way, family of 8 i think thats ok, or maybe im just used to it- the smallest room in the house uses 6 haolgen bulbs, and the largest 12, i dont know if that makes a diffrence tho

the best way to check out how much your using is call the elec and gas company, ask them how many kwh kilo watt hrs your using over an anual period based on actual reads taken, then ask them to manually work the cost out (some companies and peple may have 2/3 rates for example the first 728 units per 1/4 charged at higher price (EG 9pence p per kwh) and everything there after at a lower rate (EG 8ppkwh) also some people may have Economey 7 or 10 or friends in scotland THTC, if this is the case you will have a unit rate for day usage and a diff unit rate for night usage. then if you have a standing charge times that by 365 to get your annual service charge cost. once you or the supply company have worked these out times by 1.05 ( this is the 5% vat that utilities are charged in the UK) the total you have is your annual usage.

Another thing to look out for if ou have hig usage are fridges / freezers, if you hear them humming and buzzing away alot then the thermostat is up the creek and if the morors are constantly running this can cause your bills to go up by £200+ a year.

It is very unlikly that some one has "tapped" into your elec supply for some one to do this and affect your bills they would have to connect a cable after the meter which means you will see a "ODD" cable inside your house running through to next door something you would notice !!!

some people get a nasty shock with a bill if they have gone all the way through winter on estimated reads then in summer get an actual one and almost 80% of the winter usage gets billed to catch up on what you have not paid.

but running a fish tank does cost very very little !!!! much less than running a computer for 12 hrs a day !
