So I keep track with the fish by dating when they have fry, we have three females regularly giving birth and this is the pattern of fry births...(number in brackets is number of fry)
Day 1 ( 8 )
(?)
Day 21 (6)
(?)
Day 24 (6)
(?)
Day 37 (8+2)
(Red Female)
Day 48 (1+2)
(Sunset Female)
Day 50 (1+4+1)
(Sunset Female)
Day 64 (5+2+1)
(Red Female)
Day 75 x 2 births (6+6+2+3) {July 14th}
(Sunset Females)
The plus signs are those fry found later on, as many hide for a few days and can avoid detection for up to a week, but there is a clear pattern and right now I know our red platy will give birth in 2-5 days. I clearly haven't counted very accurately as those put the fry total up to 60. We have 60 in our net breeder and about 15 in the main tank along with about 4 that disappeared in the main tank. Needless to say that is a lot of fish, but it makes me very happy to be able to observe them and I've even seen one of the platy actually giving birth which is awesome (not so awesome when you then witness another fish eat it before it had a chance to find its fins).
Last week we bought a new net breeder as the other one had so much algae growing on it that we couldn't see the fish inside it at all. Which means clearer pictures of the fry inside of it.
Dad in black circle; fry in red:
Fry in Net Breeder:
Mums Nosing:
60 Fry In A Bucket:
Finally two fry just released nosing at the rest inside the net breeder:
We have 1 male swordtail, 1 male Tuxedo x Everything, 2 Sunset Females (1 died) and 1 Red Female. We are hopefully going to keep 1 Male Spotted Sunset, 2 Female Heavily Spotted Sunset, 2 Female Red Platy and 1 Female Sunset from our batch.
That will make it a ratio of 3 males to 8 females.
