I'm thinking of changing my current substrate to another color/type and was wondering what is the best way of making the change without upsetting the cycle/fish. My current tank is about 2 years old and cycled. The water parameters have always been perfect and the fish are very healthy. I just want a different look for the tank.

I have changed my substrate twice since its been up with no ill effects. From stones to sand.
Good luck!!!

Put the fish in a bucket emptyed 1/2 the water kept it in a bucket. took stones out put the sand in put the water back in and let it run for half an hour. Then when everything had setteled i put the fish back.

Here it is folks,

I went with black substrate and some additional plantings.

What do you think?

Thanks for your comments.

Looks nice.

Thanks. I'm really pleased with the look of the black.
I'm planning a 40 gal Cichlid tank for the living room and I think I'm also going with the black for that tank. No plants, just some very cool rock formations.
