Okay the tank is 12 US gallons, and the pump does 400 LPH thats 105.5 GPH, thats obviouslt slightly less than 10 times an hour, I was thinking of adding an EKIP thermofilter or thermopump http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/NavR...9&N=2004+113767 wich would give me another 125 GPH boosting my turnover to 19.25 times an hour. I like the idea of having the heater be part of powerhead because heaters just don't look good in reeftanks and I dont really want to stick it in the back compartment because if my autotopoff system were to fain it would die.

So, let me know what you think, I put 15 LBs of Medium grain argonite in there, I might get some live sand to seed it, its running freshwater right now though.

Hi OPCN...I can help you here as I am running the 24G. The stock pumps in these guys are inadequate and one of the most commonest 'DIY's' for our tanks is adding a second pump to bring it up to 20X flow or more. You can buy a Maxijet 400 which would double your flow. Most people add the second pump to the first chamber and either add a bulkhead to chamber 2 and put the outflow there OR simply run soft tubing over the wall and with some elbows make an over the wall outflow. I have had my Ebo Jager heater in chamber 3 and have never had an issue with water levels, although, I manually topoff. I don't like having them combined because if one part fails, you lose the other. Also, why do you want air infused into your pump? It will act sort of like a protein skimmer and possibly cause a surface slick in your tank.

Wise idea to test the tank first as these tanks have had a cracking history. HOWEVER, some have heat issues. I would add all your pumps in before starting your tank up. You don't want to find out that the heat is 87 degrees with both pumps running. It's happened with these. Keep us posted.

Here is a pic of my over-the-wall mod along with the cassette skimmer mod. You can also add a Hydor Flo nozzle to the right outflow.

PS...I worked in Anchorage during my junior internship, fall/winter '84.

Fall and Winter are good times to be in Anchorage, Magpies migrate throught in fall, and Ravens are around all winter.

anyways, I was going to remove the air infusing hose bit and just have the whole thing a few inches under the surface of the water, although putting everything on the surface of the water seems more attractive to me than having it in the water column I don't like the idea of all those little bubbles flying around. I don't think heat will be too big a problem as my dorm room doesnt ever climb above 75, and personally I think its a bit odd that your two pumps shot up the temp to 87, it seems like one might be broken or have a bad bearing and be producing more heat than it should. I don't really feel like any DIYin except todrill a hole into the back of my hood for my autotopup feedlines, the tank is up and running sans a second pump and it hasn't cracked, I have a tiny 25 W heater in there and it keeps the Glofish happy, but it will be atleast 2 more weeks befoe I go salt. Thankyou for the input.

Misinterpreted..MY heat didn't shoot up...others have. I am running two pumps and a submersible 10 watt quart halogne fuge light (hot) and my temps never go above 81.7. I'm sure you'll do fine without a lot of mods. SH
