Hello,

A friend (who is not a fish keeper) looked after my fish for a week over Christmas, I told her exactly how much food to give them but unfortunately she was worried about killing them so she gave them more every day!! So I came back to fat fish, did water change etc.

I am particular about doing my weekly changes and keeping my tank clean. I have congo tetras and neon tetras, my congo tetras look great, but a couple of my neon tetras have white spots on their lips, I wanted some advice what to do.

I have a smaller tank not in use at the moment, I could set that up and move the neons out and medicate the smaller tank or should I medicate my big tank or do nothing?

My stats are fine now, my nitrate went high with the waste and I think the stress of that week has now effected the neons??

Thank you Elaine

How big are the spots on there lips.
Are they the size of a grain of salt.
Any redness to the spots.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing, scraping off objects in the tank.

Hello Wilder

Thank you for responding, I can only find 5 neons now :( lost one, 2 of the neons have white spots on their lips, one the size of salt, the other slightly bigger, no redness, no flicking, feeding fine. I fed them with a frozen food last night and the nitrate has gone up so going to do another water change tonight.

Temperature is at 26, sas thinking should put temperature up? and treat with white spot med tomorrow?? What do you think?

Have had 6 months of no trouble :(

Many thanks for your help Elaine

Any whiteness to the mouth cotton wool.
Does the mouth looked bleached out.
Is the mouth rotting away.
Do the spots move.

Not totally convinced it is whitespot yet.

Not sure if this photo will work, it isn't very good, was struggling with camera, flash etc

It looks quite light the spot on the photo but it seems whiter when you look at it, both spots don't seem to move and are on the underside of the bottom lip, I can't see the mouth rotting or bleached and they are wanting food. Worrying about my congos, shall i put the tetras in my other tank??

oooooomg just had a thought one of the tetras (who has half a tail since I got him) did have a sore on his side a few months ago I took him out and medicated him in the small tank for a few weeks, it seemed to heal over but the stripe didn't come back, could this be related to that. Going to go have a look at him now

I do really appreciate your help Wilder x

Issolate and take the bacterial route.

The fish with the sore was it a neon tetra.

Yes it was, have taken all neon tetras out have done a 50% water change and had a good clean. Will go bacterial route with the neons, how long would you suggest to have them out, I have a spare tank and filter.

Thank you Wilder x

Do any of the neons red stripe area look bleached out, or have a milky substance on the red area.
