What gallon can a neon tetra go in??? I am not a big fan of tetras but I was just wondering...

mm, well you can put 5 in a 5 gal. tank.. HAHA. rule of thunb for FWF(freshwater fish) is 1" per gallon.

Neon Tetras are small, but very active and need swimming space. I'd go for at least a 10g for five or six neons. You want them to thrive, not just survive.

Good example of how not to use the 1 inch rule. As vinylman, pointed out, fish also have swimming needs. I would make that at least 10 gallon- or to be more accurate, a tank with a length of 24 inches, and keep at least 6 of them, to provide for their schooling needs. For a 5 gallon tank, think about a smaller species or one that is less active.

I bought 5 neon tetras, and they were all dead 2 days later, with perfect nitrate/pH levels and dechlorinated water.

That's the luck of the draw, unfortunately; as with Guppies, their popularity has led to massive overbreeding, which has weakened them badly. Also a reason why they should only be introduced to cycled AND matured tanks.

Neon tetras are sensitive fish, just because you can't find a problem with the water chemestry doesn't mean their isn't a problem... a 10gallon tank would suit them fine as everybody said, but if you want to truly enjoy a shoal of neon tetras I recommend a 29gallon-55gallon tank, that way you can have more fish, and a larger shoal...
