ive been looking around for external filters and cannot make my mind up between the last two of my choices.
option 1
fluval 205
price is good and i trust the name as ive had 03 and 04 external filters running my many tanks over the years.
very reliable and spare parts sold nearly every where but spray bar not sold with filter.
option 2
tetra tec ex 700
a fiver more than the fluval and i believe has a spray bar with it and has very good reviews
i do like the look of the set up and filter media which means it suits my needs almost as it is.
i would like to know if any one has the tetra tec ex700 and can compare it to the fluval 205.
cheers people

I've never used a Tetratec so can't comment on what they are like.
I do have several Fluval external filters, though and would definitely recommend them.

The Tetratec has more media flexibility, doesn't have kinked hose, and comes with a spraybar.

Fluval has less flexibility due to the sponge pads, but I like the pads, they are great at filtering out all the big bits of debris and are vest easy to clean out quickly rather than having to take trays out to rinse a big sponge.

I, personally, like Fluvals more. The ribbed hoses are brilliant IMO, they just don't look as nice if they are in a tank where you cant hide them (like open top tanks). They are so much more flexible than regular hosing and last longer, but regular hosing is very cheap to replace anyway.

I've not used a Tetratec on one of my tanks, but have played with them on tanks at work and they look good, not as 'solid' feeling as Fluvals IMO but they are great filters and generally get brilliant reviews.

If you aren't as fussed about mechanical filtration, and would be stuffing it mainly full of bio filtration with just a little bit of filter floss before hand, then the Tetratecs probably better if it's only £5 more.

If it's just on an average tank, or you would be using a decent amount of sponge in it anyway...the choice is yours. Go with the Tetratec if you want to try something new and the means nothing (could be spent replacing the carbon media), just go with the Fluval if you really like the layout and just want to basically.
