I'm thinking about starting a peaceful community tank (which is currently cycling) and I'm wondering if diffrent schools of tetra go togeater. I wish to put them in a 40 gallon tank which has the width and depth of a normal 29 gallon but is tall. I'm thinking congo, heart tetra, black (I dont know the exact type but they have big fins), pristella, etc. Also, could I put any gourmais in there? If so what type? The gravel which I have fairly coarse and I would like a bottom dwler which wouldent get hurt. Thanks a million.

I have tetras in a semi aggressive tank. I keep skirts (?black widow?), albino buenos aires, serpea, lemon, silver dollar, and bleeding heart. Along with these I keep a blood parrot, a rainbow shark, and a handful of albino cories. Most of the tetras are semi aggressive the exception being most notably neon. Tetras school or shoal only with others of their specific variety. Gouramis are a whole other story, most are rather territorial as they mature. If you truly want a peaceful community you need to be very careful with the tetras. Do some more research and see what others post. Good Luck. Scott

I have had a small 45L 'orb' and for the last two weeks have had 4 glowlight tetras, 3 rosy fin tetras, 2 dwarf neon rainbows and 2 platys.

Whilst it's true they all prefer their own kind, my experience in the short time I've had them has been that they do still hang about in a big bunch alot of the time, particularly the tetras, and there's no aggression. Apart from the platys, they also prefer the shade of the plants from the light!

The glowlights and rosys are similar in colouring although rosys are bigger and more diamond shaped instead of torpedo shaped, maybe they just think they're bigger cousins!!

My the answer was to research (bearing in mind you will often have conflicting advice to decide about), and try some fish but have an escape plan - either a friend who will take any that don't fit in or give them back to the LFS. (I had three zebra danios which I originally cycled with and they drove all the others mad! so they went to a friend and are now very happy in a bigger tank with different fish.)

Thanks, I'll have to get rid of the two tiger barbs that I currentally (back to lfs) have in there but thanks for the ideas.

I have kept - Rummy Red Noses and Neon Tetras with Dwarf Flame Gourami's together previously. Worked realy well, A nice colourful tank. Rummys hung more towards the bottom of the tank, the neons in the middle, the gouramis moving up and down the water column. Good luck with your hobby
