hello, i have 3 tetra fish that are...well, fat.. i am almost positive that they are pregnant, they have been..plump.. since may 1st, in my fish tank, i have 11 fish in the tank including the tetra that are pregnant, all the fish are about the size of a quarter or half dollar...my questions are:

-Do the parent tetra have to be separated from the other fish in order for them to feel comfortable to spawn?

-Will the other fish eat the guppies? Will the parent tetra eat the guppies?!

-Do the guppies need to be separated in another bowl of some sort until they are able to fend for themselves?

-How long would it take for the parent tetra to spawn?

-Are there any special foods that the guppies should have?

Thanks in advance to any help you guys can provide me

what size is the tank, can you post water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate , and ph, all fish will eat the young one's if they can catch them, but if there is plenty of hiding spaces and plants, some of them should survive, are you sure the tetra's are preganant, what do you feed the fish, and the tetra s like to be in larger groups, usually no less than six.

the tank is a 55 gallon tank and is brand new, its gone through all the phases, really am not sure on the ph, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, i am not sure that they are pregnant, but they have huge stomachs, i feed them TetraMin-tropical flakes....is there any marking or something on the tetra that can distinguish them as male or female?? the other fish in the tank are 5 neons, 2 angels, and 1 sucker, if that helps any..thanks again

Angels and neon tetra's don't mix as the angels eat them in the wild, did you cycle with the neons, females are much rounder and plumper than the male, would like to no the ph, to many dry food can cause swim bladder, dropsy and constipation, i would try them with some shelled peas, can they maintain there balance in the water, what does it look like when the fish go to the toilet.

I would get your water tested as soon as possilbe,or best still buy your own, so you no your stats.

the tetra can maintain their balance in the water, i am going to the fish store where i bought the fish tomorow and i will take a water sample with me to get it tested, will have more info tomorow...thanks

tetras will spawn whether there are other fish there or not.
what kind of tetra do you have? the females will be fatter than the males. If theres no males then they will either reabsorb the eggs or drop them. for them to survive you would need to spawn them with a male in a seperate tank if you want to keep the young, but they spawn every couple of weeks anyway.
all the fish will eat the guppy babies if theres nowhere for them to hide. people either use a small breeding tank or a breeding net to grow the young in.
guppies dont need any other foods apart from what you feed the others.

When you go to the lfs, pick some frozen bloodworms up and daphnia and brimestrimp, need a more varied diet.

Finding out what kind of tetra is very important as it will give you an idea on how likely they are to actually successfully breed, tetras are a very varied group of fish and there are many kinds.
For tetra fry you'll need egglyer fish food like liquifry no.1 for egglayers etc.
