What do you mean by "high"? What are your readings? Have you added anything, fish or otherwise, to your tank? Did you recently do tank maintenance? Anything else you can think of?

Well what happened was i added 2 new fish (Angel) to the tank but it seems that the guppies are at the top of the tank all the time like for air???

the NO2 & NO3 are very high...im not to sure what readings as its all dont on colour chart but it should be white/pinky but its a dark pink and im a bit worried!!!

Cheers "H"

25% water change asap

can you increase surface turbulence too?
Sounds like you've overwhelmed your filter.

k so ill do change tonight afetr work...then what? im so new but so poo at the same time...

surface turbulance??? sorry whats this?

Cheers "H"

thank you sooo much

You've added more fish than your filter bacteria can deal with the wastes from.
This has caused the fish to have irritated gills and so they can't get enough oxygen through them which is why they are hanging at the surface.

Water takes in oxygen at the surface, more surface movement allows this to exchange to speed up.

You can increase turbulence with airstones or by directing the filter outflow to give more ripples or splashing.

The water change is to dilute the toxins that are present.

just spoke to my mum at home...she went to the lps and he has said to do a 90% water change and kind of start again...also while i have been at work today 2 more male guppies have died :(:(:(
im gutted but they said it a learning curve just a shame as i put my all in over the last 2 months
:("H":(

also knowing my luck the new fry will die also:(:(:(

I'm not exactly an expert here, but I've been told many a time that you should not do any more than 50-60% water change at a time... if you take 90%, you're going to stress the hell out of your fish, not to mention lose pretty much all good bacteria you have in the water... I'd say do 40%, and then do another 20% oe something like that in a few days...

cheers thank for all your help!!!

I did a water change last night and the fry and everything were fine just to let you know that i tested the water and it now is fine...so fingers crossed...to be honest i thought the baby fry would die but they seem to be fine and healthy :):):)
cheers again guys "H"

Keep a close eye on water stats and do either a 10% daily water change or 20% every 2 days, if ammonia or nitrite starts to rise again.

Good Luck
