Hello,
I'm preparing to set up a 35 gal hex tank in the next couple of weeks, and I'm wondering what the best water test kits and water conditioners are. Are there any I should avoid? Thanks,
Ashley C.

Avoid test strip kits... they usually are bad. As long as you get the test tube (water) test kits, I think you're ok for that. For water conditioner, IMO, water conditioner is water conditioner. It's all just diffrent concentrations of the stuff, usually from one drop to one gallon or five drops to one gallon.

i use the API liquid test kit and the API stress coat.

As a somewhat newbie, Seachem Prime has changed how I vew fishkeeping - cheap as heck and for some reason it buffers the water to where I need it!

A quick word of advice on the API test kit, I am not very impressed with the nitrate tests. I used to think my tanks had a very high nitrate level, until I tested some RO water and the test kit still registers at least 5-10ppm nitrates.

Both of my kits do this, which would tend to ward out a bad test (or prove that I am bloody unlucky).
