8 gallon tank, cycling

so the lighting set i bought is broken and they won't be getting one in until monday/tuesday.

will a desk lamp be a suitable temporary replacement or would that only make it look good as opposed to add anything to help the cycling process or plants?

(disclaimer-this could be one of the stupidest questions ever)

might be ok as a temporary measure, just be careful it dont get too hot as some of the desk lights get extremely hot!

in my opinion some light is better than no light!

I wouldnt shine the desk lamp directly on the tank. Having it near the tank though should be fine.

I take it you are using fish to cycle?

nope. trying a fishless cycle. i've aimed the lamp to the desk 2 inches from the front of the tank

it's just a have plants in there, but i assume that the light given off by an ordinary table lamp would be pretty much useless anyway?

hmmmm well the fact it's making a "centre stage" kind of effect is kind of cool. and i saw your pics sam....but why would people make bulbs to help plants grow? (obviously i'm not completely niave)
is it worth me getting my money back or should i stick with the strip lighting?
any other thoughts?
