I want to know one simple piece of information I never seem to hear. How high should the temperature be in a community aquarium like mine? My tank size and fish are in my sig.

I keep mine at 79F and I have cories, neons, plecos, swords, and platies. They're all doing great.

I agree with Jake. Keep it between 74-84, depending on your fish. Your fish prefer it between 76-82.

The lower the temp....the more sluggish the fish become. The higher temp, the more active and in turn stressed they become. You have to find a happy balance for your fish. Mine are always around 78 and that seems to be good for most tropical fish.

EDIT: Spelling

Mines at 78 right now. For some reason I thought that was too high.
That might be highest for some species, but by no means anything to make the fish suffer. Some fish like a range between 72-78 and that is usually the lowest tropical range you will find. The highest is about 76-84, so around 76-78 is about good for almost all tropical fish.

Just another thing to bear in mind. Being cold-blooded, a fish's metabolism increased at higher temperatures. This means is will be more active, need to eat more and therefore poop more. Higher temps may contibute to a shortened life span. I tend to keep my fish at temperatures towards the lower end of what is recommended.
