The heater in my Rekord 70 went on the fritz last night causing my tank to be beyond 30°C in the morning, I sadly lost one of my south american puffers during the night because of it, i now have another puffer and a rusty plec left, the plec is fine but the other puffer is in bad shape in a quite hosptial tank i threw together.

Is there anything aside from lowering his water temp that I can do to help him, he occasionally swims about but looks in distress, and his fin on his right hand side is clamped...Things do not look good

It looks like he has a problem with his swim bladder aswell now because every so often he will sort of barrel roll, otehr than that though, he seems to have perked up a bit, and now I have the etmperature under control in the tank, though i'm still worried as to whats wrong with the heater, I dont know if its functioning properly, i've had these little puffers for almost 2 years now, and I dont want to lose my last one

After a close inspection of the Heater I saw that something was definatley wrong, the black layer inside had started coming away and there was some brown liquid inside, then afetr noticing some cracks...it broke in two. SO the heater was DEFINATLEY messed up, no I very much regret pluggin the thing back in after noticing the crazy temps, I did turn it down, but felt unsetteled, so plugged it back in, a horrible horrible mistake on my behalf.

*update*

The other puffer is a lost cause :-( , he cannot swim properly and his breathing is very very quick, his stomach is also bloated aswell and he is currently laying on his back at the bottom of the hospital tank, i think there was some sort of voltage running through the water aswell as the big crack in the heater glass caused the heater to fill up with water, and this is what I think has killed and injured my two puffers, teh plec on teh other hand seems fine.

I'm going to have a serious rethink next time I buy a Jewel product

I take it no one is gonna reply, give me any advice or anything, tell me anything I could do for him or medicines to try and nurse him better...

Perhaps the heater was leaking more then voltage into the tank. Is the plec still ok? We sure count on the heaters and filters to do their job and stay safe. I'm sorry that yours failed...

sorry guys but the fuse should have been taken out if it filled with water!!
the current would only have flowed for a brief moment and the sudden current should have at least taken the fuse in the plug out if not then the trips in the house fuse box should have gone out (RCD units??).

anyway, I hope you've bought a new heater...

the thing was, its was filled with water, yet it still managed to stay ABOVE 30°C, and I know this may sound stupid, but the brown mess that poured out of it COULD have been a bi-product of electrolosis from teh -ve and +ve terminals of the heater, and the process of electrolosis makes the water VERY warm, however the water may not have been conductive enough to be sufficient for the process. Thats what i think has happend.

And I haven't been able to get a new heater yet as my LFS is closed on mondays (go figure :/ ). On a puffer fish forum though they suggested that my remining one puffer may have brain damage due to the high temps, and im starting to believe this is true.

Oh yeah, so that rules that out, maybe it was just the heat then which caused it to crack. Either way my remaining puffer is looking worse for wear, his stomach is all bloated, and he's laying on his back, i think his swim bladder has sorta packed up, would this bloating go down at all or is it impossible to tell?

Dont know that much about puffers yet, i do know they puff up sometimes and can't deflate, but if he is laying on his back its not looking to good, can you put the fish into a spare tank or a large bucket with filter and put it somewhere warm if only to give him a chance
