I remember someone saying that they are getting a betta and if it was at a good age they would breed with it.

How can you age Betta's??? Is it possible...

Thanks.

Bettas are usually past their best for breeding after about 6 months of age which is how old most pet store bettas are, you can breed them after this but the risks of producing deformed fry and the parents getting ill from breeding are increased, the only way of telling the exact age of a betta is to purchase one from a breeder who knows when the betta was born.

It doesn't mean you CAN'T breed Terry at all, just means it might be a bit more dangerous for him that usual.
The equivalent is a 50 year old woman, could still possibly breed, but it wouldn't be advised.

does that mean I can't breed Terry? he's gotta be six months+ now!

By all means Haych you can try, he is certainly a stunner and would make some lovely fry! just make sure he is very fit beforehand i.e well conditioned etc, it is probably more important that the female is younger, just don't leave it too long before you do and keep us all updated, I would love to see his fry :hyper:

People might argue with me about this, but i have recently read in quite a few places, thatthey can be as young as 4 months, or as old as 18 months.

Wether you want to try it out etc, is entirly up to you. Although the younger the better. :good:

always younger the better anything younger than 1 year is the best to breed, this just means less culling of fry and means less defective fry as well, anything over 1 year I usually don't even breed them myself I stay with ones that are under 1 year to produce the best strains, after 6 months they show all colour so are good for choosing what lines to follow etc 3 months is still a little early to breed them but I have done it and the fry I think where 0 culled out of the bunch all where healthy. Anything over 1 year wouldn't recommend unless following a line as in mother son daughter father etc then its kinda different but still like a 20 year old with a 50 year old to make a child is a pain this is why you see alot of deformities when people try and follow a line, known as line breeding
