Today, while cleaning the glass on the outside of my family's 40 gallon tank, I discovered what appeared to be a very small crack. At first I thought it was a piece of hair, so i took out the algae scraper and tried to scrape it off, but it stayed there, so it is a crack. It looks like it's starting on the inside. My question is, how can I stop this crack from getting bigger so the tank doesnt explode?

If it is infact a crack, then i would get your fish out of there as soon as possible. According to my knowledge, you can't stop it once it's started.

Well you might be able to put some aquarium sealent on it.
Like the stuff they use to pout the sides of the tank together.

Other than that. I have had a small crack on one of my old tanks. I just put some tape on it. But I don't think that would help.

My 2 cents

JDH covered it in 1 shot, if it is a crack it will just get worse from the stress on it now, the only thing would be to break that side out and replace it or buy a bare tank the same size and go from there :/

sure it's not just a scratch? A scratch shouldn't do any harm...

I'd go get a rubbermaid tub, stick a heater in it and your filter and get your fish and the water out of that tank and fast.

I had a hairline crack like that two years ago. It stayed teeny tiny for 8 hours and then within seconds spread the entire length of my 150 gallon tank and all the water and fish were on my floor. Thank God no one was in front of it :X
