I'm tearing down most of my tanks due to health issues as well as other issues. I'll be keeping my 20 gallon. Question for my 20 gallon, would a single betta pugnax be alright in my 20? (Currently in a 40). Either alone or with some neon tetras.

I was wondering though, I have an african leaf fish I'm rather attached to, would a single African leaf fish in a heavily planted 55 gallon be alright with either no water changes or water changes every 3-6 months?

My new houses tap water isnt suitable to fish due to the water softeners our well has. We have a small RO unit, but it only does an ounce per minute, so I'll be using that and remineralizing (definitely a word) the water for my 20 gallon, and hopefully my 55 gallon

I would say yes. Plants should be enough to take care of the the ammonia of the one fish in a 55g.

Might need to top up with bottled water from time to time.

Acids can build up so when you do get round to water change, compare the tanks ph to your clean water. If theres a significant difference, do small (20%) changes every other day rather than a one off 70% change.

Yes top offs will definitely be needed! Thanks! Really dont want to be tearing down my tanks, but its long overdue and my fish have been suffering due to my lack of ability to care for them well and my slowness in making the decision to rehome. Downsizing is unfortunately the only option, and makes the move easier

Yeh initially its a bit sad to have to do it. I took down and sold my roma 240 barb tank a few months ago. It was a shame but definitely a relief. I just didn't have the time for that and my 200l. No point stressing yourself out over a hobby that is meant to be the exact opposite!

from what I see on seriously fish it seems that it needs to have base dimensions of 31 x 11 inches. I think it should ok in the 20g. I'm no expert though..... Is it a long or high?

I can't imagine a 20g not being big enough for a single pugnax. I've never kept leaf fish, but a heavily planted 55g can get by with 2 or 3 water changes per year if all else is well.

High unfortunately. I wish it was a 20 long
