if i only have one choice, should i measure the tds or the gh?
and why please?
thanks!

Why would you want to know those params, do you keep sensitive fish or are you trying to breed you fish

You should measure the general hardness, rather than the total dissolved solids, because most fishkeeping resources will give GH values and don't even mention TDS.

I think Tds is both Kh and Gh. Not 100 percent sure though.
And The-Wolf sorted out that issue here :).

nope...
i forgot to mention that i have discus in the tank.

With discus, it's most important to know the Gh. Keep it below 250, and above 50 ppms. They will thrive and breed between these levels. If your Gh is low, make sure you have a high carbonate hardness (alkalinity), that way your Ph can't fluctuate.

do you happen to know the equivalent points on the API test kit?
thanks very much!

Yeah actually lol.

1 drop equals 1 german hardness, or 17.9 ppms of american hardness. So if you have 10 drops, you have 179 ppms. and just subtract or add from there.

many thanks again!

would you recommend a gh closer to the upper limit or to the lower limit?
maybe in the middle?
