Hi... Can anyone help? I have lost 12 guppies over the last 3 days, they dont seem to have
any signs of disease so I think it might be the water.
My boyfriend bought me a new tank today and has just set it up with new plants, heater, filter etc.

How do I swap my surviving fish to the new tank? How long do I leave the tank before I swap them
over?

I just want to move them into the new tank before anymore die.

Many Thanks
Jules

Hello

I am afraid guppies don't do well in new tanks, you need to cycle your tank first or you will probably loose all of your guppies - sorry to be the bearer of bad news. If you think it is the water then you need to do a water change - quite a large one.

If you could leave some more information like:

Your current size of tank:
Occupants:
Decor old and new: (eg air stone etc.)
New additions:
Nitrites:
Nitrates:
Ammonia:
Temperature:

Then we could try and help you more. Until then, I would suggest doing a water change, raising your temperature to 27 degrees celcius and adding a small amount of aquarium salt. I would also recommend visiting your lfs and asking for a general tonic.

Good luck, I hope your fish all survive.

ps. if you need any advice on cycling there are loads of people on this forum that would be willing to help, unfortunately I didn't know about fishless cycling when I set up my tank so I can't give you any advice.

My advise would to be set up the new tank and let it run for a day. Then start the cycling process. (lotsa advise and articles on that.) I wouldn't use any media from the old tank to seed the new one if you don't know what's wrong obviously.

As for the guppies in the old tank, just try to do a good change of water, cleaning the substrate and see what happens. Check your water and see where it's at. Sorry you lost them, that's a lot!
Good luck!

Thank you for your advice. The lad in the pet store said to put the remaining guppies in the new
tank with the plec and see how they go on!

The guppies are just laid on the bottom of the tank and very lifeless. Also, one of the neons died
last night.

I inherited the guppies from my dad and have had them since February. I thought I was doing
very well with them, cant beleive that they are all dying on me!

I spent all day yesterday reading everything on this forum and I am now hooked and determined
to get a good tank of healthy fish.

Kind Regards
Jules x

In my experience guppies are pretty hardy fish. I cycled my first tank with 5 male guppies and they lasted another year before eventually pegging it for other reasons. If you have a tank which has a cycled filter I'd just transfer the media from that to the filter in the new tank, and hey presto, you've cloned the filter. The thing that does spring to mind is overstocking. How many fish did you have in the tank originally? If 12 guppies died and you still have some left, and you have a plec, and some other fish. I'd guess you'd need about a 25 gallon tank just for the fish that died.

I do agree with Terriann, we do need more info about the tank the fish are in and the tank they are going into. Don't worry about make and model if you don't know, just rough dimensions or capacities, and what kind of filter they have and we'll do what we can from this end. The other thing we do need are the four main results from a water test. Ammonia, NitrIte, NitrAte and pH.

It is SO easy to get hooked on fish. I read everything I could get my hands on when I first got started. Now I have 4 tanks! LOL
