I have read previously that you shouldn't put a tank in a small kitchen where you're cooking chilli / frying food and stuff like that and haven't got much ventilation because the water filter / venturi can dissolve fumes / food substances into the water.

Is this actually true or a fish keepers wives tale ? If it's OK, I'm thinking of putting a small tank in my small kitchen which is not particularly well ventilated and do cook spicey food from time to time. The chilli fumes are enough to make me cough.

Fumes generally can enter the tank water easily enough, so I guess it's exactly the same for cooking smells.... not convinced it would do much harm though.
I've never heard the spicy food / chilli thing before, and something about it doesn't ring true to me. Chilli oils are pretty volatile so am not sure that they would get into the tnak water easily.

I think the comment on chilli is my paraphrasing, because it's the most noxious stuff I cook :D
