I've been through many ideas on what fish I should put into my 10gal, which is cycling now, and recently Platys have come to mind. I am more or less a newbie, and I've heard these are great starter fish. Anyways, I was thinking about getting 3 platys (1m:2f) for my tank, but what other fish go well with platys? I was thinking guppies but with all those livebearers my tank my get overstocked rather quick :D . Anyone have any suggestions for tankmates for a trio of platys in a 10gal? My goal is to have a colorful and active tank, but also enough for a newbie to handle!

I've had good luck with platys.I bought two ... before I found out you should keep 1 male to 2 females ... and now I'm overrun with them (20 gallon and a 6 gallon tank full of the lil buggers). I'm really wishing I would have only gotten 2 females and NO males haha.

Anyway, I've kept mine with corys, otos, and zebra danios with no problem. Oh and apple snails too. :)

I have one suggestion...or maybe two ;)

African Dwarf Frogs are absolutely adorable, friendly, learn you are food giver, just like fish, and although not colorful, WILL add activity and enjoyment to the tank....I'd say 3 would work, maybe 4. Mine will come to the glass, stick their little feet on it, then stare at me from between their feet until I feed them

Or

Ottocinclus, Dwarf Sucker Fish, Dwarf Pleco, whatever you want to call them. Again, not really colorful, but active, and serve a purpose.....algea eating :)

Ok I lied, two more  Amano Shrimp are always welcome in a small tank. They are some of the best algea eaters around and don't add to the bioload. They do more good them harm. And Pygmy Corys are also cute, but again, not real colorful.

For colr, your Platies should be good.....so many color choices

HTH :)

I was thinking a trio of ottos also with it, and have been considering a adf...

grr... so many choices... i should have just got a 120gal so I could have everything I'd ever want bwahahahahaha! I could have just gotten rid of my bed and there would have been plenty of space in my room! I could just sleep on the floor! :D

Ok, seriously, thanks for the suggestions. I still really have no idea what I want, but I guess that's one good thing about waiting for a tank to cycle... you get to decide what you really want!

Haha I know what you mean. I started with one 6 gallon tank over the summer ... now I have a 20, a 10, a 5.5 (nano-reef), and the 6, plus six smamm betta tanks (1-2.5 gal each). It's an addicting hobby ... and like you, I'm running out of space in my room LMAO. No need for beds! ;)

Good luck with whatever you choose! :)
