Hi Guys -- I am in Houston with Hurricane Rita on its way. I have a 55 gallon tank. If we should lose electricity, how long can my fish live without the pump working?

Thanks,

Hard to say but i imagine they would last longer than you'd think, even a couple of weeks. If you are able to do regular water changes that would help.

A bigger problem could be the heater but i'm thinking its not too cold where you are at this time of year.

Hope it doesn't come to that and good luck. :)

last year we lost power for 10 days due to a hurricaine. At the time I had my pleco and jack dempsey - they went the entire 10 days without heat and the filtration. both made it fine. Im surprised the jack made it because the water got down to around 40 degrees the last two days. this time of year - with the heat you should be fine.

Thanks for the reply on this. It makes me feel alot better. Did you feed your fish during the ten days or is it better not to feed them to help keep the water clear?
