I'm currently cycling my 10 gallon tank, i have the temperature set in the upper 80's to promote bacteria growth, after a few days i lose about an inch of water due to evaporation. Is it ok to add new water during teh cycling process?

It's best to have a lid on the tank so that water doesn't evaporate, and fish don't jump out (yes some do that). Some fish shops can make a lid to suit any tank.

Might be a stupid question, but aren't you taking out water to do tests?

Water will evaporate regardless of whether there's a lid. I'm guessing you meant to say that that it might evaporate more slowly with a lid versus without?
