Okay, So I have been running my Aquamode 600 (60l) for just over 6 months now, and my fish are starting to outgrow, so it's time to upgrade.
I have my eye on a 125l fluval.
It has a cabined so that opens up the option for external filtration.
I feed quite a lot of live food to my fish, so would like something that does a good job of getting all the bits out of the water as well as the decent bio filtration.
I don't want to spend too much, but equally I don't want to spend too little and get a crappy filter.

Any recommendations?

Cheers!

Josh.

Eheim's Classic range, the best value for money you could possibly get.

I know they're for marine tanks but protein skimmers are great mechanical filtration devices and I know a few ppl that use them on their fresh water tanks.

A boyu nano skimmer 120lph are very slim and are internal filters so just suction it to the side of the tank. they're quite slim and transparent so shouldn't be too much of an eyesore.

I currently run 2 of these on my nano. 1 as a skimmer and another modified to run like a phosphate reactor.

They're cheap too. £20 brand new off fleebay.

Could be an option for you!

Have a look at the Rena filstar xp series, I had one come with my latest tank and its about 4 years old, no repairs and is still running really quiet.

heard good reports from people on here about the filters from all pond solutions on ebay heres a link to them

also the eheim classic range are excellent just make sure you get the plus model so you get the shut off taps for easy cleaning

I know you haven`t given it as an option but I have an aqua one tank with a built in trickle filter system and I cant think of one disadvantage. I think that the main advantage over other external systems is that the trickle filter is gravity fed so there is never a loss of performance and you get all the options of media choice as you do with canister filters, easy maintenance too

I found that it wasn't good enough for mechanical filtration in a planted tank..

Thanks for all the replies so far!

I too had the built in filter in the hood of my aquamode 600, it keeps the water chem decent, but there were always tonnes of bits of plant floating around in the water, and it was forever getting clogged up.

I'm liking the eheim classic range at the moment, think I will go for it, but just one more question.

The filters the pet shops use, layered boxes in the corner of the tanks, what are they?
I noticed at wharf the other week and I have seen similar ones on ebay:

Anyone got experience of them?
Or am I best getting an external ?

Also I am used to the trickle filter so I have not needed to aerate the water, will I need to do this if using an external canister?

Cheers!

Will give the All Pond Sollutions filters a thumbs up here :good: .

I have a 1400 + UV model on my 125 Juwel Rio, I find it a great filter and absolutely massive media capacity. It's great and I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed, the price is what you would actually expect for a piece of plastic with a pump stuck on it which is what all filters are.
