Hey, I've got a small tank that I'll be freeing up next week.

I'll need to clean it out properly as the sands gone pretty nasty looking heh.

Its 60cm x 20cm x 22cm - almost 6 gallons?

So I want to know two things, what can I add that'll be interesting, and have some charisma? (as this tank is in front of me on my desk.)

And also, how should I cycle it? as I have an up and running established rekord 120?

TIA

A dwarf puffer, possibly? I'd do a fishless cycle in the normal way, you could seed the filter but thet's not really needed.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been interested in Dwarf Puffers for some time, but am put off by the fact that they are pretty much the only thing I can keep in the tank at one time.

I was thinking about a betta too, are these intelligent like cichlids? What could I keep with them??

Some amanos?

Well, I personally think they're intelligent fish, but I admit I've only had 3 so far, and can't compare them to Cichlids, since I've never owned them. A couple people on the forum think that they're 'boring", and "all they do is sit there", but I find my bettas to be interactive and enjoyable -- even if they're 'just' Veiltails. :)

Since bettas do tend to have a bit of personality, it's really hard to predict if this hypothetical betta will be okay with tankmates. It's really on a betta, per betta, basis, and asking for opinions on the matter will generate as many replies as there are previously/currently owned bettas on the forum. Knowing that, you basically have to ask yourself, "If my betta turns out to be a little killing machine with a big flashy tail, would I be happy with just one fish in my tank?"

edit:

Or even the reverse: "If my betta turns out to be the biggest wussy this side of the Pacific Ocean, and I know he'll get picked on by everything that swims, including my very own equipment, would I be OK with modifying my very fishkeeping habits to keep just one happy?"

Dwarf puffer if you're fine with having just one fish, betta and ADFs if you're not :)
If you really want personality I'd suggest a plakat (short-finned variety) betta if you can find one. They don't have big heavy fins weighing them down so they tend to be more active and spunky, or at least that's what I've experienced with them. Plakats are definitely my faves ^_^
