Hi,

I have had our tank since 23rd April 07. We have had a number of losses, but this may have been explained by overcrowding. I have just taken a reading and have found the following:-

PH = 8.5
Ammonia = 0.1
Nitrite = 4.0 mg/l
Nitrate = 50mg/l

I know the latter two are dangerously high, and it has been suggested that I engage in rapid water replacement over the next week or so. I would be grateful if someone could give me some advice as to how much water I should replace and how often.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Phill

10-20 % every day for as long as it takes to reach zero ammonia and zero nitrIte.
you nitrAte is ok for the tank but I'd try and avoid it going above 50ppm

The nitrate is ok, but could be a bit lower. The problem is the ammonia & nitrite, these should be at zero. Daily 25% water changes with a dechlorinator for the replacement water are needed. Consider either rehoming the danios or getting a larger tank, as they need more swimming room.

yes but never do more than half in one 48hr period

suprised noone has mentioned the extremely high pH here

how do you know he don't keep african cichlids?
that pH would be ideal for them.

I didn't mention it as the regular water changes should bring it back in line, like everything else.
