hi all

what is the smallest tank you can put one betta in ? pics would be helpful, im thinking for my kitchen.

also what needs to be in the tank - what filter , lights, pump, etc any special plants or gravel salt etc

hope this all makes sense

cheers

Dan

whereabouts in the world are you? different countries have different types of tank and equipment.

minimum tank size recommended for a happy betta is 2.5 US gallons.
some keep in smaller, but in my experience bettas like space to stretch their fins.

also, how much are you willing to spend on a tank?

yeah thats the kind of thing, but it's best to go for a long tank rather than tall.
bettas need very soft filtering, or none at all, they can't handle strong currents. and they'll need a heater too.

it doesnt say how many gal it is from that pic but 2.5 US gal isnt very big so that may be fine...id wait for some 1 to OK that aswell tho :good:

wouldnt get your betta from pets at home tho as im not 100% sure of the quality of their livestock and most if the advice and fish profiles they have in the store near me are pants!

opinion varies quite a bit on this one, some people will say 1g+, some 2.5+, some 5+. It depends I guess what is a priority for you, a smaller tank that takes up less room if you haven't got much, or a larger tank where the betta *could* (In my opinion, would, but that's just me!) be happier. Also some betta's are just naturally more active than others so would then need a bigger tank.

In my opinion the most important things to consider is that whatever they are kept in should be heated and filtered. So the size of the smallest heater and filter you can get is going to affect the size of the tank they should be in.

Personally my betta is in a betta lifespace tank, it's aprox 8g has a nice slow trickle filter that is perfect for betta's and has great lighting for plants. Betta's do like to rest a bit so plants and shelter is quite important for them.

My fella has a betta in one of those tanks, the 5g one. That's a good size IMO :good:

There are 1 gallon tanks, 2.5 gallon tanks, and 5-5.5 gallon tanks....umm...all you need is a heater (option), rocks (not bright colored ones), caves (not too fancy and crazy looking), you don't need a filter at all, temperture reader, and umm....i guess thats it.

I may get scorned for this, but I have 2 bettas (divided) in a 2.5 gal long tank. There is a small filter and a heater in it, along with silk plants (plastic ones can rip their fins) and gravel. They both seem happy, the male (Baxter) is constantly making bubble-nests, and the femal (Lily) seems happy, too.
I used to keep bettas with no heater, but have found they are much more active when they are warmer. The heater keeps it about 76 F in there.
HTH!

My LFS has advised me to buy a 16 litre - 3.5 gallon (U.S) size tank with filter and heater for £45 does this sound like good advice ? :/

thanks

sounds reasonable to me. Depends a little bit on the quality of tank, filter and heater if that's a good price or not but it seems reasonable, normally a small filter is £10, a heater is £15, so that's £20 for a 3.5g tank. Always worth trying to price up things seperately to see if the package deals are any good.

Also check what the flow rate on the filter is and if it's adjustable in any way, betta's really don't like a lot of flow.

:)

The aquarium you get free with that magazine is an open top aquarium and i thought that Betta's were good at jumping so it would be no good.

also i dont understand why you have to pay an extra fiver ???

cheers for the feed back

it comes with a glass tray so you can make it not open if you like.

It has a clear cover & you only pay the extra fiver if you don't pay by DD.

I tank under 20 odd litres is always going to be intrinsically unstable. I would say this 25l tank is minimum sized - unless you have back up tanks.
