I realized I want more fish than my 40 gallon tank can accommodate. I priced new tanks and decided I can't really afford another large tank right now. So I was thinking about getting a 2 gallon or so tank and a male betta for now.

Then I remembered this old tank that is tall and awkward because of the way the cover is constructed (only small holes for heater and filter and one 3"x5" opening--not room enough to reach through).

It is 20" tall and has six sides of 6.5" each. Would that be okay for a single betta? What could I put in there with him? Seems kind of big for one betta.

If it wouldn't suit a betta, is there any fish that would work in this environment?

Those tall tanks aren't ideal, but they do the job. You can essentially do a small community tank in it - small catfish, amano shrimp, small tetra's, guppies... all potential fish that I've kept without problems with a betta.

How many gallons is it? You might be able to put in a couple of male platies or some pygmy cories with the betta if it's a reasonable size.

Sounds like I might be back to a 2 gallon for a betta. Forgot that they come to the surface for air. Maybe some guppies in this tank. I don't think it's very good for schooling fish like tetras. I found a spot for it in the living room. I could put it on the bookcase that's on one side of the entertainment center and the betta tank on the other side's bookcase....
