hello guys i just want to know how i can clear up my tank. My tank seems to be having a "bacterial bloom" and i think algae. The tank has barely any algae on the walls of the tank... but the water seems to be green and cloudy at the same time. so i was wonering how i can resolve the problem. I dont really understand how to treat bacterial blooms so can you help me?

COuld you ive us some stats? such as ammonia levels, nitrate, nitrite, is it still cycling? fish, tank size
if it is a new tank that is still cycling then a bacterial bloom is common, and you shouldnt have to worry, but if it is a well established tank someone more experienced than me could help.

Green water is triggered by an ammonia spike. Did you add fish recently?

If you do a 80% waterchange and block out all light for 3 days (blankets work well) and then another 80% waterchange, the green water may clear. However until we can find out why there was an ammonia spike in the first place, the condition may come back.

oh umm my tank is a 46gallon bow tank and it has a light fixture and it is on 10 hours a day... and um the ph is around 6.8 and the amonnia is 0 but i have to get a better water testing kit so sorry and no i did not add fish

I have a similar prob but my tank is a new set up. I had it running for a week before i added fish. Then i introduced a red wag plattie, a red onion snail, an albino rainbow shark and a red sword tail fish. I did a water change 10 days after introducing the fish and found a baby fish. I then moved the baby fish to a gold fish bowl over nite. using water out of my tank to fill the goldfish bowl. The nxt day I made a basket out of a tomato punnet and a pair of tights and now have the baby fish in the top of my tank. My water is green tho no algea on the sides of the tank but im scared to do another water change and putting stress on the baby fish. Its tiny. I may try blocking the light out for a few days and see if that helps settle the problem.

hmmm

lower the light time.

Nice big water changes (declor)

i think you need to do a water change (at least 50% if not more) first. and blocking light would probably help.

liquid test kits help a lot! they do everything. the strips are hard to read and very inaccurate, i just dont like them.
if you get a liquid test kit and there is ammonia i would cut down on how much you feed and do water changes everyday if you have a reading over .25 ppm. you might be going through a mini cycle.
