My wife and daughter claim that my aquarium water has a strong odor. I don't think it's as strong as they are saying, but I told them that I would inquire about something I might be able to put in the water safely to reduce the odor.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you running carbon in your filter? If not give it a try. The tank should have a slight (not strong or overpowering) odor like wet grass(the kind on the lawn :p ). If it has any other type of odor it usually indicates that something is not right. Have a check of the parameters and perhaps a good vac if the odor continues. HTH :)

I'm running both a UGF, and a Whisper 60 external filter. The Whisper 60 uses 2 biobags, and 2 black filter media's. I don't know what is in the biobags, and I don't know what the filter media is made of.
My aquarium just finished cycling, and I just put in 6 tetras, so I don't think that I should vacuum the gravel yet.
In my opinion the odor isn't all that strong.

I've got another, unrelated question though.

My family and I went away for the July 4th weekend. We left last Saturday morning. That was the last time I fed the fish, the water seemed a little on the cloudy side to me. We returned home early Sunday evening. When I turned the light on, the water looked very clear.

After approximately a few hours or so, the water started to look a little cloudy again. It looked clearer from the front, and somewhat cloudy from the sides, and only in the same shape as the lamp was emitting light.

Why would the water be cloudy only in the portion that is lit up?
And how do I correct this?

The bio bags contain the carbon and this looses its potency in 4-6 weeks so perhaps you should replace one of the biobags to see if it makes a difference. The cloudiness could be a bloom of some kind or just suspended particles. You said that when you got back the tank was clear and then what did you do between then and when you noticed the cloudiness? keep us posted. :)

is the food finely crushed? Could it be food particles floating in the water catching the light? Also what are your parameters now? How often do you feed the fish? How long are the lights on per day?

Yea, I do have a tendancy to finely crush the flakes. I feed them once a day. I can't give you an exact amount of time the light is on. I guess about 6 hours, or more.
I haven't measured my parameters in a while, so I can't tell you that either.

tstenback has already kinda said this but I think the reason it only looked cloudy when the light was on was becasue of the light illuminating the cloudiness. Like when a ray of sun coming through a window lights up some floating dust or cigarette smoke in the room and it can only be seen where it's lit up, even though it's everywhere else aswell.

Are all your fish accounted for? If you have dead fish in the tank, that can cause smell.

Also you may be overfeeding your fish, as you stated, "tank was clear, then you fed fish and was cloudy"

Feed every other day. Do those water changes
