my friend wants to stock her 29 gallon with various livebearers and varios tetras...now my concern was that ive never had succes keeping livebearers healthy without adding salt to the water, and i dont think that the tetras (and oh ya her khuli loach) would be ok with the salt. is this right? can she keep both together happily?

Nope you can't use salt with catfish or khuli loaches, as they are "scaless fish" and most tetras like neons for the same reasons.
I would be concerned you have to use salt though just to keep your guppys alive, if everythings truly well in your tank you should be able to keep guppys and other livebearers perfectly healthy without the use of salt; i've kept guppys and other livebearers for years now and i've never once had to use salt for any purposes.

same as Tokis i have kept uppies in my tank for near on nine months now without the use of salt. and they are still very healthy, active and very colourful.

Personally if you need salt to keep them alive suggests something elsemmight be wrong? i cant think what though

i have guppies and a crowd of neons and they get on brilliantly always playing with one another

I've never had to add salt to keep my fish alive, but that's another story.

Livebearers and Tetras usually do okay together, provided none of the Tetras are fin-nippers. I've had Livebearers with Black Phantoms, Harlequins, and Glowlight Tetras, and they did very well.

I kept Neon Tetras with livebearers and they got on fine. I have never put salt in my tank as I have a pleco.

neons and livebearers should go well!
onlyuse salt if you have to really i think

Yeah but i think the point here is that this person has to use salt 24/7 just to keep their livebearers healthy and most tetras would almost certainly die under those conditions which is why i didn't advise any fish at first.

thanx for the replys......i dont keep live bearers anymore....and probably only had problems with them cause i was first starting out..i hope my friend has more success :D

Ah, okay. That might explain it.

I hope your friend has good luck too. Livebearers and Tetras are great fish. :)
