We have 2 threadfin acaras and would like to set up a tank for them. We,re looking ideas on stocking to go with them. Its a 260litre corner unit.

Threadfins have a reputation for being quite aggressive fish so i think it would be best to stick to non cichlids. Maybe
2 Threadfin Acara
1 Cactus plec
20 Emperor tetra

You might get away with a mid/top dwelling cichlid like Festivum cichlids, I think you have space for a group of 4-5 of them.

THey are only aggressive during spawning to mates (or potential mates). My experience, and what I've read from others, of keeping them is that they are very placid with other species. If challenged they are able to stand up for themselves, within reason, though.
However, in a 260 litre there won't be that much space left once the threadfins reach adult size, as we're talking potentially 7-8" long fish. I'd go for cories and a shoal of larger tetras as tankmates.

Threadfins are absolutely stunning as adults BTW !!! Good catch !

Theyre in a 300 litre at the moment with 2 rotkeil and a young nic. No aggression so far but theyve taken over a plant pot thats buried in the gravel and are defending it. They are beautiful fish but you read such conflicting information on the net about them from size aggression and breeding :shout:

Yes, I had a pair for a while, about 3-4" I think. THey were very good natured, although able to stickup for themselves if challenged. Were too young to breed. In the end I moved them on as they were really not thriving in my hard, alkaline water. Just weren't growing.

sexing wise ive no idea. The threads on my single one are always getting nipped off whether these help with sexing i dont know.
He/she is the softest cichlid ive had. Mines around 5" and had it from a baby. As said there an 8" fish (though they dont get chunky) so dithers would prob be your best bet. what were you thinking?

I honestly dont know what I want. I,d like something colourful to compliment them as theyre beautiful fish. The tank theyre in at the moment had 21 cardinals when we got the threadfin and theyve mysteriously dropped to 13 in a week.
